The Summer Quiz 2016 - Round One

By Old Pete
June 1 2016

Well, the close season is upon us and it gives the Editors of COYSDC great pleasure in announcing the return of Old Pete's Summer Quiz! Have a go at Pete's first set of questions but please don't use search engines to look up answers for posting. It defeats the purpose of the piece, as well as ruining the effort Pete has made. No merit is gained either way as questions are intended for fun. If you only know part of an answer, put it up for the discussion of others - it might lead us to the whole answer! Expanding on an answer, giving full reasoning is positively encouraged - so away we go...

Thanks for taking the time to do the quiz. Off the top of my head.

1.Admiral Beatty at the battle of Jutland.

7. Suffragettes
8.Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ireland, Portugal. (I also believe the flag of Cyprus has green olive leaves on it.)

10. I'm really not convinced about this, but was Churchill the only wartime leader in the list who did not hold a general's rank?

Wee Jim
01/06/2016 16:53
10 Eisenhower - all the rest have had tanks named after them

MK Al
01/06/2016 17:14
7. The Suffragettes

8. I think it's more than five. Ireland, Italy, Hungary, Portugal, Bulgaria. Isn't Lithuania in the EU? Also Cyprus definitely has green leaves on the flag.

11 Bavaria - the others are regions with a dog named for them

Is there a Pershing tank? I thought it was/is a missile...

Phil,
Yes the late ww2 heavy tank to succeed the sherman was called a pershing. You're right about the missile too

For 12 I'm thinking Santiago as the rest are fictional cities though I'm not sure about maardam and deseret

9. Now this is a tricky one since there’s only a little to go on. Can’t think of any priest composers. Popular music groups: well I hope it’s not Blue, could be Greenday or perhaps Coldplay with Yellow, the Beatles’ Yellow submarine or disappointingly Simply Red; early Explorers I would go for the Vikings: Leif Erikson and Erik the Red; Garibaldi – this is the most definite clue we have – think he was associated with Red shirts.
So let’s go for RED: Garibaldi’s shirts, The Beautiful South who sang “Old Red Eyes” (as I can’t stand Mick Hucknall), Erik the Red and you’ll have to help me with the composer?
2. Is X Cockerill and Y Mallinder?*

Stingray66
01/06/2016 18:42
1. Admiral of the Fleet Beatty at the Battle of Jutland.
2. Is X Herbert Morrison and Y Ernest Bevin.

Vivaldi was a priest (which I knew) and red-headed (which I confess I didn't know)

In the interests of keeping Hucknall out of it, I propose Spice Girls as the band and Ginger as the colour.

Or how about The Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Phil.
01/06/2016 19:33
Or the popular 80s beat combo Red Box...

OldPete

you are all doing really well so far - even getting one or two that I didn't think you would

I shall have to try harder next time.

8 as well as the flags the others have mentioned, there's also a tiny bit of green in the imagery on the Spanish flag.

OldPete
02/06/2016 08:21
just to clear up the flags one - tiny bits of green don't count - oh and my Mrs pointed out the green leaves on the mainly white Cypriot flag after I had posted the questions.

I was thinking only in terms of larger obvious areas of green .

2. X is Aneurin Bevan and Y is Ernst Bevin

No 10 is Paton, the only manufacturer of knitting needles on the list

Deseret is something to do with salt lake city, newspaper or something. Cant recall exactly but Ive been there thats how I know. Others are definitely fictional Kings Landing - Game of Thrones, Gotham - Batman, Mahagonny is operatic - from Brecht but dont know whose opera.

The quote in 2 looks American as written.

Wee Jim
02/06/2016 09:33
The opera was by Kurt Weil I think FWF

Wee Jim
02/06/2016 09:35

OldPete
02/06/2016 11:53

Corkst
02/06/2016 12:33
Maardam is the fictional location of a series of books by Hakan nesser but the books never state what country Maardam is in - don't know if that is relevant.
Old Pete, a perfect style of quiz for a collective, and enjoyable even when one doesn't even know the answers. Thank you.

OldPete

By my reckoning there are right answers or all but - to all the questions but one

So I'll send the answers in on Monday - next round is being prepared .

Matthew
02/06/2016 14:39
I assume that's question 3. I hadn't the foggiest, though after a bit of an internet search I think I know the answer.

Phil.
02/06/2016 15:43
Yup, just "3" left I think, Matthew.

Hopefully, someone will complete the set...

(ps. I've now looked it up too!)

OldPete

Of course somewhere on the internet / Webb thingy you will find the answers - the challenge is to refrain from doing so

I don't use it to frame the questions.

Corkst
02/06/2016 22:50
And you've gone and spoiled it. "Internet/Webb thingy" - disingenuous old fogeyism when that is exactly where you are posting it. "The challenge is to refrain from doing so" - yes, we know, people were just saying they had looked things up because they didn't know the answer and were curious. They have not spoiled it for other people by revealing the answers or (worse) pretended that they knew the answer. "I don't use it to frame the questions" - what would be wrong with that exactly? It is no different from looking things up in a book. It must be chilly up there on the moral high ground. It's only meant to be a bit of fun.

No 3. Possibly Saudi Defence Minister in response to allegations that Israel had overflown Saudi territory to attack Iraq/Saddam, 1992.

And OP thank you for a very enjoyable quiz (and I didn't Google this answer).

Keith - no longer in Bahrain.

Arfer. A few facts for you. I did not "object" to your name, merely pointed out that I found it interesting that the mods tolerated it when taking such a hard line on swearing. I did not object to "OP and his quiz". Read my post further up to see how much I objected. I just found OP's little old buffer rant unnecessary when it was patently obvious how much people were enjoying his quiz. Old Pete, I apologise for my overreaction. Arfer, I suggest you take a bit more time to actually read what people have written. I am now going to take the dog for a walk before it gets too warm (not usually a problem we have here) and head to the beach before it gets too crowded (not usually...etc).

I'm almost embarrassed to confess even using the Internet I can't find and answer to Q3. And I'm a hip cool on trend geeky academic

OldPete
03/06/2016 10:21
Jim - its an alleged quote / paraphrase of what someone said - well reported at the time and often alluded to ever since whenever some one is regarded as doing something that in view of their previous attitudes seems or could be problematic or even ironic.

and just to save us a lot of bother it has nothing to do with the EU debate.

Sarge

No.3: Is this reference to Churchill making a pact with Stalin to defeat Germany in World War 2?

Churchill was a long-time opponent of communism, so to have to make even a temporary alliance with the Soviet Union would have been a significant concession to his beliefs.

Corkst - Old Pete goes to quite a bit of trouble and effort to bring us these quizzes. Please don't spoil it for everyone else with your unnecessary comments. If you don't like it, please just pass over it.
