Lukewarm Bristol Labour to Titanic Victory

Lukewarm Bristol laboured to a win over Rotherham in chilly conditions. An error strewn contest saw Bristol score three tries and the hosts faile to score any points

Cold conditions may have a contributed to the lukewarm fare on offer at Clifton Lane, although it was all too similar to last week's disjointed Bristol performance.  Anyway, it was not as cold as Bristol's last visit!

At first it looked as though Bristol were to have things all their own way when Rotherham gave away an early penalty that Bristol, as so often, chose to kick to touch.  The catch-and-drive proved as potent as in recent matches and the ball was mauled over the line for David Blaney to touch down.  Adrian Jarvis, in contrast to last weekend, was off-target with his conversion attempt, but Bristol held a 0 - 5 lead with less than ten minutes played.

Bristol maintained a near monopoly on possession without being able to fashion another scoring chance.  Handling errors and a lack of composure let them down.  Equally, Rotherham made far too many mistakes on the occasions they did get hold of the ball.  Frustration led to a yellow card for Skurr at the start of the second quarter.  Bristol were eventually able to make the advantage count with a neat move.  Jason Spice got the ball away quickly and good hands saw the ball out to Jack Adams to go over for the try.  Jarvis' kick took the paint off the post but sadly on the outer not inner side.  0 - 10 with the half drawing to a close.  Bristol were briefly galvanised and it looked as if debutant George Watkins might score before he was welcomed to the first XV and hammered into touch.

The second half was similar in pattern to the first before, midway into the first quarter, Bristol managed to exert some sustained pressure.  Lee Robinson made some good ground with a typically robust run and the pack took the ball on and rumbled their way over the line for Blaney to again touch down.  Jarvis failed to convert to extend the 0 - 15 lead.

And that was it for scoring action.  Neither side looked as if they could outwit the other and both continued to commit basic errors.  Many supporters had retreated to warm sanctuary before the games staggered to its close.
