Blue Shirts, Blue Fingers and Blue Language!

Again...
By Richard Cundall
November 11 2008
Blue was the order of the day at a raw windswept Headingley on Sunday. Blue team shirts, my brothers blue toes, and more noticeably blue language directed at Mr Martin Fox. The Carnegie express started in what is now a trademark of the current leaders of ND1. Within 2 minutes quick ball saw Leeds with a 2 man overlap, but a shocking pass from Hepworth saw a certain try go begging.

But these were early days and with Leeds showing good domination at the set piece and territorial advantage a score looked to be only a matter of time. Good pressure was turned into points on the 23rd minute when Scott Barrow forced his way over the line. Strange converted 7-0. Bedford however soon responded with 3 points from the boot of the impressive Billy Twelvetrees.

The Leeds forwards were however in the ascendency, and a rampaging Rhys Oakley was denied a score by a last ditch tackle by the Bedford full back Harries. Leeds's 2nd try came on the half hour, a strong catch and drive from 5 meters out saw Calum Clark get his name onto the score sheet. The last minute of the first half saw Leeds playing expansive rugby in the Bedford half and at this stage a bonus point looked to be in the offing.

Tom Biggs emerged from the 2nd half, not for the first time with clean socks and knees, and at times he must wonder whether this is a 15 man game. He rarely gets passed the ball and it was left to man of the match prop Tommy Mcgee to let loose the speedster who rounded Harries to score in the corner. Biggs showed yet again that he has sublime finishing skills, but with Johnny Hepworth tucking the ball under 1 arm and frequently ploughing his own furrow, chances to show them are very limited. With the tricky conversion missed the score stood at 19-3 and the bonus point looked assured with a good 30 minutes still to play.

Bedford had other ideas and their defence held solid. Frequent indiscretions saw the penalty count rise against them. The off side law was flouted regularily and Bedford's No 9 was very good at disrupting clean ball at the base of the scrum. He played the referee well and although not always guilty Mr Fox certainly missed some glaring infringements. With the clock ticking down Leeds nearly scored but Welding was pushed into the corner flag. Further penalties saw Billy Twelvetrees sin binned and now Leeds seemed to lose their heads. With repeated penalty scrums making no inroads into a good Bedford defence a kick to the corner may have altered the lines of attack. However it was Bedford who got the last score pouncing on a loose Leeds ball which gifted a try to Harries.

For the second week a bonus point was not won but both matches were against good ND1 teams. Bedford were comprehensively outplayed and never looked like scoring points, and Leeds should have put the matter to rest early in the 2nd half. Conditions were not good but it seemed bad decision making was the real culprit. The set piece worked well but yet again it seemed that the backs took the wrong decisions on when and where to pass.

There is an air of confidence and professionalism in Leed's play this year and we sit top of the league unbeaten. However at times the Carnegie Express chugs laboriously, but I have now doubt that the engine drivers of Key and Back will resolve the problems.....

I agree with your comments about Hepworth - would be superb if he mixed a few passes into his repertoire- I prefer Vickerman who usually takes the right option & is more of a team player.

when Hepworth does his thing and it comes off it is always a great score, unfortunately his inability to pass means for every 1 try scored many opportunities go begging.

As said above if he was to vary his play he would be a very destructive attacker.

Good review btw, I wish I had been able to get to the game.

You're both right Rocky and WW but what I like about him is that he tries things and is unpredictable. If he knew where he was going and the support players also knew they could form some giant Conga like you see at dances, or at least you did when I last went to a dance about 1958.(Sm60)

Vickerman is much better than Hepworth. Can pass as well as run, and Hepworth not only tends to not pass, but get turned over as well.

Sadly no - he is very predictable - will do a mazy run, spurn all opportunities to pass & then get turned over!

Hepworth was not to blame for one of the spurned overlaps - I think it was the very first one and early on. I thought he'd blown it too as his pass rolled into touch, but the ref gave us a scrum because a Bedford fingertip had knocked it on as the pass was about to land in the overlap's lap. If it was an intential Bedford "flap" then it should have been at least a penalty, possibly even a penalty try and a binning.

He did butcher a couple of later ones though - so frustrating because his feet were dancing all game. How many breaks did he make?

I'm with Bibby on this one. The pass near the start that everyone's getting at Heppers for was given as a Bedford knock on. So not really his fault ...

Perhaps he just gave up passing after that as a bad job!

I think the trouble was that most Southstanders who would have seen it side-on were in the Carnegie Stand and only saw it go sailing into touch. Seeing as how a scrum was given, it couldn't have been entirely Heppy's fault!

To me sitting in the North Stand the most noticeable of Hepworths missed opportunities was shortly after Biggs try when instead of passing he chose to kick.Biggs had just shown he could skin the opposition a well timed pass should have resulted in the bonus point try.

Hepworth is an outstanding player if only he could learn to pass.

Granted that it was a Knock on ,but does that excuse the fact that a certain try was missed by the poor execution of the pass.

Leeds Carnegie Poll

The season has started, and we've seen the lads play a game. So, where in the table, on that performance, will we likely finish?
