The fact that Leeds suffered their only two league defeats in consecutive weeks, I believe, shows how consistent they were over the course of the season, but some of the displays were far from encouraging when you consider the size of the task that lies ahead.
In accounting terms, there were both profits, and losses to be had in the last 8 months. For me, the big plus was the development of some of the younger players. Calum Clark confirmed his potential, while Andy Boyde, (who unfortunately is leaving), Jacob Rowan, and Danny Paul in the pack, and Scott Armstrong on the wing, gave hope that the Academy was delivering the players we need if we are to succeed at a higher level. The losses, were experienced players who came nowhere near to showing they were good enough for this league, never mind the step up, and I fear that some of the players who are staying will be completely out of their depth if they pull on a jersey next season.
The rotation policy used by the management often raised eyebrows among the fans, but, with a couple of notable exceptions, the side selected did what they had to do. This however, for me, was part of the problem that exists when it comes to deciding who is, or is not capable of playing at a higher level. Nobody will convince me that ND1 is a competitive league. It is miles away from the week in week out intensity that prevails in the GP. Without being disrespectful to anybody, Leeds have probably played no more than 8 league games, out of 30, that have required a full 80 minute performance. Next season, there will be no ‘rest’ periods, even when, or if, we have built up a lead.
Currently, there is only one confirmed signing for next season, and yet eight players have been released. Putting sentiment aside, only 3 of those have the quality required to succeed in the Premiership. Surprisingly, for whatever reason, these 3 players have not played too many games this season, but, if they have given the impression they are ‘capable of better things’ than Leeds, the decision to release them is the correct one.
At the time of writing, only Tom Biggs of these 3 has found another club, and considering he was supposedly ‘courted’ by Leicester and Toulon, among others, a move to Newcastle will hardly improve his chances of international honours.
After the Plymouth game, Neil Back told me that he hoped everything regarding new signings would be in place before he began his holiday towards the end of May. Let us hope the wait is worthwhile, but as I have said before, if anybody knows what is required to succeed at the highest level, then it is Neil Back. I think he will deliver the goods. Next season will not be pretty, but if Leeds can avoid finishing bottom of the pile, it will be a success.
Come on Leeds!
