A Loan Again...Naturally!

Home a loan!
By Haxbytyke

Apart from the ongoing debate on whether Leeds should be promoted, the arrival of players on short term loan deals has split the fans' opinion more than anything in the last few weeks....

Nobody can deny the loanees have strengthened the team at a vital stage of the season, but as has been pointed out, when they are recalled at short notice, the players they replaced are called back into action, fully aware they are only keeping the shirt warm until the loanees return. As professional players, this goes with the territory, but it must have an effect on morale, and when contracts are up for discussion at the end of the season, will some of these promising youngsters decide they will be more valued elsewhere?

Leeds seems to have 3 categories of players who were not, initially, contracted to the club.Bell and Thornley arrived at Headingley at the start of the term in a season long loan deal, and injuries to our own players gave them an early introduction to the first team. They have become permanent fixtures in the starting line up and have also contributed massively to Leeds victories with their points scoring exploits.

Another group consisted of Lockwood and Mustafa who, I believe, joined in effect as trialists in an attempt to win permanent contracts. Sam Lockwood now has his contract, whilst Mo is apparently deciding if his medical studies should take priority over his rugby. By coming to the club at the beginning of the season they have become integral members of the squad, and most fans class them as Leeds  players.

It is however, the third group, the short term acquisitions who pitch up, and not only at Leeds, to be fair, because the Premiership clubs do not have fixtures enabling them to give these players the chance to keep match fit, and press their claims for promotion to the first XV. The top clubs know that most Championship clubs will happily take these players on, because they strengthen their sides as the play offs approach.

One of the problems, for clubs in the Premiership, is the lack of A team fixtures. Only 5 games in the fixture list, plus the LV cup, and these scheduled to be completed before the end of December. Consequently their fringe players cannot keep match fit, so it becomes very convenient for them to ask Championship clubs to take them on loan and give them much needed game time. Perhaps the best example of this is Will Cliff, who was reportedly coming to Leeds after the World Cup, but the deal then fell through. However with no A team fixtures remaining Sale, and other Prem. clubs will now happily offload players surplus to their immediate needs to make sure they are playing on a regular basis. George Ford arrived from Leicester, but was recalled after two games, and he is unlikely to return now, until the regular season has finished.

The two players mentioned, were instrumental in Leeds improved performance at Moseley, but now they are gone, and the lads they replaced have to come back in and pick up the pieces.

I agree with Diccon Edwards that it is up to the players to take the opportunity when it arises, but I have to question the effect on team spirit, when these short term loans are agreed. It also puts us in the position of the Prem. teams in that there are no games for those who are not playing to stake a claim for match day inclusion. So we are giving loanees a game, at the expense of our own loyal players, because we have no fixtures for them to play in.  How can those out of favour regain their place in the starting team?

I hope that in the next few weeks a few of our injured players will be ready to return, but where will they get their match fitness from, and prove they are fit enough to come back?

Perhaps something Leeds could do to offset this, is arrange a series of games against some of the local clubs. I am sure many of them would jump at the chance to provide opposition, especially if they could play on their own ground and boost their takings. It would be a good PR exercise, and who knows we may unearth a future star, and maybe even attract a few more fans.

There is no doubt that Leeds has benefited enormously from the loan deals that have taken place, as have the players concerned. But the question remains, who will get the benefit next season? I hope the arrangements bring us the end result most of us wish to see, but I also hope the second half of the Championship is not becoming a Premiership A league, in disguise. This would be yet another sad reflection on the way the game is run at the very top level, and further devaluation of the second tier of English rugby.

We all know why we are borrowing players in mid season. The goal this season is promotion. If squad morale suffers due to players not getting gametime then that is a small price to pay. On the other hand if we do not get promotion then those players who do not get picked might well look elsewhere to play their rugby.

Good article and it raises a few valid points.

Leeds United tried this path a few years ago to try and stop relegation, I think. Although players they attracted were out of contract journey-men. The plan failed.

Although we have been getting thrusting youngsters, keen to show their parent clubs what they can do and so far it has paid off. However, if we lose Thorno and Belly......then I personally feel we maybe finished, for this season anyway.

Just hope, our own thrusting youngsters aren't tempted away in the summer.

Thoughful article Hax.

thumbs down

No surprises that I agree with WW - we need to get the very best XV out there on the park this season to get back to the premiership and if that means a starring role for Bell and Thornley I'm all for it.
The logic is inescapable:
Loanees come to the Championship because they're not starter material for the Premiership.
If the loanees are getting the starts for us its because they're better than what we have already.
If the loanees are better than what we have already then nobody will be knocking down our door for our lads.
We won't be going up with what we have - that much we know.

If we don't go up we can't afford to have full timers clogging up a vastly reduced wage bill next season - loans for the season are the right answer for me.

Re: A Loan Again...Naturally!
An interesting and thought-provoking article. Mention of the 'A' league competition makes me wonder whether the 'professional' Championship clubs should be incorporated into this competition and the number of games increased accordingly. Something for the RFU to ponder as they seek a sponsor for the second tier. I also wonder whether this year the number of players loaned out by the Premiership has been increased due to it being a World Cup year and some clubs increasing their squads accordingly. There's an interesting thread on another board regarding funding, the salary cap, and the academies which basically calls for players coming through the academy should be exempt from the salary cap unless they move on. Talking of salaries, I'm interested in Soop's comment regarding our greatly reduced salary budget should we not achieve promotion this term. I thought our budget HAD already been significantly reduced.

Re: A Loan Again...Naturally!
I believe we are well down on last season Mark,

Backy quoted £2.8 Million at the start of last term
This season I understood we had to stay below £2 Million to support the loan repayments required.
Next season we'll only be getting £350,000 instead of £2.6 Million in the Championship so the wage bill will be decimated further....
I believe that Lachlan Mackay is the biggest earner and he's over £100,000 but he'll be gone after this year when his deal is up - there's lots more to trim yet.

Re: A Loan Again...Naturally!
While I totally agree with most of the above their are a couple of points that seem to spring out.
Firstly, when the idea is muted to play against other local sides I wonder what sort of the level the opposition will be from. Is it going to be National League sides or lower levels such as Yorkshire 1 and below ??
Personally can't see National League sides considering the idea of playing a Carnegie 'A' team. They are also involved in heavy league commitments and have the same problems, probably to a lesser extent, as Leeds Carnegie.
If the 'friendlys' were against the like of Yorkshire league teams then, again, personally I can't see the standard of opposition being beneficial to bring the second string on. No disrespect is intended by this statement.
Secondly, surely someone at Leeds, when they agreed an alleged £100k salary for Mackay, bearing in mind his previous record for injuries, took out some sort of insurance policy to cover this eventuality ??? If not then a big mistake.

I see, from the modern day curse of social networking mania, that Lachlan MacKay is now looking at his future beyond rugby.

[uk.linkedin.com]

I don't know if that say's anything specific about his current situation or where he see's his future rugby involvement.

The professional life of a rugby player is a short one. It would not make sense if players were not looking to the future beyond rugby, whether that be within the game or outsde rugby. So, for me, there is nothing to read into Lachlan's intentions. Indeed, I would be dissapointed if he was not looking to the future.

To be fair I reckon the guy who doesn't "massage" his CV is in a minority of one.
