It’s good to play at the Y.M.C.A.

Yorkshire Carnegie put one foot into the quarter finals of the B and I Cup with a workmanlike display played in all sorts of conditions at the Huddersfield ground this afternoon. Sunshine, rain, hail and snow all featured, but in the end Carnegie overcame the conditions to grind out a bonus point victory over a very enthusiastic Ulster Ravens.

The conditions on the pitch were obviously worse on the pitch than they seemed from the stands, and most of the play in each half took place in the half opposite the clubhouse. The visitors had first use of the conditions, and they took the lead following some good pressure with a well worked try out wide. The conversion and a kickable penalty missed the target, but as Carnegie fought their way back into the game, Leonard reduced the arrears when he kicked a straightforward penalty shortly after.

However, the Ravens continued to attack, and were rewarded when they created a huge overlap on the left hand side, and their winger crossed by the flag. The conversion sailed between the sticks, and the hosts were up against it.

Good breaks by Dudman and Lucock came to nought, a lack of support, and pace, stopping promising moves, but when Carnegie kicked to the corner, the line out produced another penalty, and from the drive, Josh Bainbridge, broke from the maul to cross the whitewash. Leonard couldn’t tag on the extras, and at half time the visitors led by 12 points to 8.

Ravens restarted the second half, and amazingly, Carnegie dropped the ball. From the resulting scrum the visitors crossed again, and with a successful conversion, now led by 11 points. Carnegie fought back, a good break by Lucock saw Vickerman in support and he finished the move by crossing at the side of the posts. He did appear to be the victim of an illegal tackle as he crashed into the posts, and picked up a knock that eventually saw him leave the field. Leonard added the extras. The officials then missed a blatant stamp on Ben Harris as he lay on the floor, but not long afterwards, another good break by Lucock saw Paul Hill scatter defenders to cross out wide. The conversion failed, but the hosts now led by 22 to 19, and this was increased when Charlie Beech forced his way over the line and Leonard’s kick completed the scoring.

Not a thriller by any means, but a decent second half performance just about meant Carnegie deserved the points. We still find numerous ways to get rid of the ball, and there is a distinct lack of pace in midfield. We will face stronger opposition when we return to the league, but some decent individual performances today. Once again Smith and Beck dominated the line out when the ball was thrown straight, and Casson put in a big shift at number 6. In the backs, Lucock and Vickerman made ground when they had the ball, but a bottle of pop this week for young Josh Bainbridge. The youngster never shirked anything all afternoon, and he took his try very well. Well played Josh.

I was pleased that after a slow start we got better as the game went on- not worse as we have seen recently.

Agree on Bainbridge- thought he was very good.

Finally, the attempt to stop Vickerman scoring looked very cynical. I saw no attempt to tackle him. Would be interested to see it again but surely it should have been a card?

Shout out to Lucock. He has his critics but I thought he made some good breaks and the team as a whole looked like collectively they were thinking the win through.

Come home from a YC game much happier than any time this season. They don't look like a Premiership team by any means, but at least now they look much more cohesive.

MASSIVE praise to Tommy and the coaching team

Waiting for the good times ...

Nice report Hax. For those who were not witness to the conditions, the wind, fresh from the Artic and bearing gifts of snow, hail and rain and blowing in the face our team in the first half explains why we were behind at the interval.

Missed the game but it looks like a real good win. Well done tommy and the club.

There was some promising stuff in amongst.
But for the first 20 minutes at almost every contact Carnegie either knocked on whilst in possession or gave away penalties when they weren't.

Blimey was it cold.

The basic mistakes we make week in, week out, are frustrating, but there seems to be a spirit among the team now which was missing. Mike Myerscough was water carrier today, and he was screaming out his support from the touchline all afternoon. Hopefully he'll be playing again soon.
Also, as I left the ground, Marching On Together could be heard belting from the changing room. Suddenly, things are looking better.

COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

Griz you are absolutely right that there were a lot of handling errors in the first 20 minutes.

The encouraging thing for me is we got better during the game. Don't think that has happened before this season.

I'm with Hax- feeling slightly more optimistic

True enough. There was no sign of heads going down and the team spirit certainly appears to be improving.

Well reported Haxby.

What seems to be important to me is the fact that the team have now notched up two wins on the trot. It is hoped that the winning mentality is returning to the team, as this seemed to be lacking in the three matches I have watched this season at Headingley. A sterner test is to come at Rotherham this weekend followed by the trip to Jersey. Two wins there could set thing up nicely for the visit of Wuss.

A step in the right direction. Now it needs to be followed up!

Given that we went further behind just after half time I thought it was a good shift - especially given the conditions. It was bad enough being wrapped up in loads of layers - I don't know how the players cope with that cold; their jobs I suppose.

I see signs of a recovery and I thought Tommy looks much happier in his post-match interview.

I've not heard Tommy before, but I certainly noticed when he sorted the pack out a couple of seasons ago. After that interview I've only got one question: why wasn't he give the job when Jimmy went?

Quins got clobbered by Bath and Easter led a players sorting it out night apparently. And then they stuffed Leinster. Ultimately it is upto the players.

Considerably more than that I would say. The Bar was packed both before and after the game. The Stand was full and there wasn't much room on the touchlines. Congratulations to Huddersfield YMCA for the warmth of their welcome on such a freezing day. I am surprised that no has mentioned the Hog Roast, the outdoors beer tent and the "Carnegie Bitter" brewed in Huddersfield that was available in the bar.

I am happy with the last 2 wins as they will help with team morale and confidence but let's not get over excited as it is the Mickey Mouse Cup. What really counts are the Jersey and Wuss games. Some exciting rugby though on Sunday in the second half and the much maligned Lucock did really well I thought.

The Offie match report says 937, that's not to say that Hax's number is wrong..........

On a serious note, the lowly attended Micky Mouse cup matches would be terrible at Headingley (driftwood and all that) and playing at grounds around the county seems a good idea. But next season play at the YMCA when it's warm - please?

And thanks to the YMCA for putting on an excellent welcome and I recognise the weather is out of their control.

Good place for a windmill though IMHO.

Lucock has always been a good player. He will turn our to possibly be one of our best. He's in the Burdon mould if you ask me but with one or two more/different attributes. Remember, you heard it here first !!

Great to see some of the old offloading going on and if we can keep that going but bring our outside backs into the game a bit more with quick ball I think we'll rip a few teams up with some of the talent in the back three - assuming it's not as cold, wet and windy as it was on Sunday !

Also, have to say Hudds YMCA put on an absolutely splendid day and the game was very well supported. Massive round of applause to them.

Quick ball would be good but it is getting snarled up in the contact area. I've yet to see the forwards clearing out consistently at the ruck.
