The weekend ahead.

The break in the Championship league programme for B&I cup games is over. Next weekend the Championship resumes. For a change interest is not just in the tussle for play-off places but also in who will be relegated at the end of the season.

The league matches to be played this coming weekend are:

London Welsh v Cornish Pirates - After the 20 point deduction Welsh are 2nd bottom. The squad is threadbare with only 5 frontrow players in it. Welsh have not had a fixture for 2 weeks due to their non-participation in the B&I Cup.  A Pirate win would leave the race for the bottom wide open and push the Pirates into the play-off places.

Rotherham Titans v Richmond - Titans are 3rd bottom and Richmond will be targetting this game as winnable. Home advantage is all Roth have got going for them this week as their tiny squad is ravaged by injuries..

Bedford Blues v Doncaster Knights - Donny will want to win this to establish themselves in  3rd place as they are only 2 points above 5th placed Pirates. Bedford have been inconsistent all season.

Ealing Trailfinders v London Irish - Ealing have showed good league form which has seen them rise into the play-off places. Visitors London Irish have been too strong for everyone this season. However LI lost in the B&I Cup last weekend , denting their air of invincibility.

Nottingham v Jersey Reds -These two occupy 7th and 8th in the league seperated by one point. Jersey have been hampered by injuries. Nottingham have not set the league alight yet.

London Scottish v Yorkshire Carnegie - In the corresponding fixture at Headingley the Tykes won by 10 points in a 9 try festival. Last time out the Exiles thrashed Rotherham at the RAG whilst YC were beating the Welsh at HC. Expect another high scoring game as the Exiles  do not defend well and we don't often dominate a game for the full 80 minutes.

If results go as I expect then Pirates will replace Ealing in the top four and that could well be the 4 play-off contenders decided. If other results go as I hope then London Welsh will go to the foot of the table and Rotherham will be dragged into the relegation dogfight. My thoughts on Welsh are that they ought to be relegated. However I would settle for Rotherham disappearing into National 1  for a couple of decades.

That will teach me not to try and second guess the RFU. It appears that they have "grown a pair" and London Welsh are no more. That means no relegation from the Championship this season.
