Matt Hampson

Twenty-year-old Matt, a member of Leicester Tigers' first team squad and academy squad, picked up a serious neck injury whilst at England Under-21 training at Northampton in March 2005.

In April 2005, his parents released the following statement through the Leicester Tigers' official site:

"We would like to thank the people of Leicester and the rugby world for their support and prayers, following Matt's tragic accident. We are overwhelmed by the wonderful response and the amazing fund-raising events which are taking place.

"Matt is in a ward now, but is still being supported by a ventilator. As yet, he has no movement from the neck down, but is now able to speak, which is wonderful! His positive spirit is amazing and his self-belief is only due to the wonderful support from family, friends and the rugby world.

"Leicester Tigers have been a family to us throughout this whole tragedy and we would like to thank them most sincerely for the help and support they have provided."

02/09/2005: One of Matt’s team mates Matt Cornwell has during the summer been touring with the England U21s and now has in his possession a fair haul of kit that is player issue only. Over the next few weeks he’ll be putting this up for auction on ebay with the hope of raising yet more for Matt Hampson. Click on the banner below to go there:
