Syston and Melton U17s in National Final
By Kornboy130 April 22 2008
Right well here goes, my obviously biased coverage of the match: the match kicked off with Syston receiving and a good pressure chase by the Wirral forwards led to a botched catch and a tap back, Wirrals captain, openside and Sale Sharks academy player collected the ball and was tackled by yours truly, the fast pace of the opening 20 seconds was to continue throughout the rest of the game.
Syston, much like their Midlands Final conceded a try early - with Wirrals captain placing the ball down from a maul created centre field 10 yards out, Syston were quick to re-group and came out from the re-start and applied the pressure, several phases continued which resulted in a 5 m scrum to Syston, Syston managed to get a shove on (a rarity during the game - Wirrals forwards out-sized the Syston pack considerably) and Wirral conceded a free kick for lifting the scrum up, Scrum half Stuart Cox took the tap quickly and after pressure on the line a great piece of dynamic inter-play between tight head Matt Ardron and Hooker Ali Shaw saw Hooker Shaw burrow over for the touch down. Dave Torr added the extras to make it 7-7. A further touch down by number 8 Aaron Lockington saw Syston pull ahead.

The next touch down went to Wirral again as they pressured the Syston line and poor guarding by the Syston pack saw scrum half Stuart Cox exposed and unfortunately the ball was spilled and Wirral scored an easy try for which the Syston forward were promptly given a B*llocking.

Syston soon claimed the lead again when fly half Tom Collier, spotted a half-gap on the blind side, changed his angle of running completely to slice through the Wirral defence and side step the full back for a score under the posts. Dave Torr once more added the extras. The scores were at 17-12 at half time to Syston (I think, I struggle to remember fully when I'm playing).

Syston came out all guns blazing once more and a slick piece of handling by the Syston backs saw Full Back Jack Illston cross in the left corner. The latter stages of the game are a bit of a blur to me but what I remember is Syston Winger Ryan Liquorice being put over in the right hand corner by good carry and pass from the bass of the scrum by Aaron Lockington and Wirral scoring 2 tries - one of which being the last play of the match after Syston had lost momentum as they felt the game was in the bag. We played well for parts and very well for others - but we will have to up our game for the Final ... but I think we can do it.

I dont mind and im quite glad the lads get a bit of recognition, would have just written a better one had i known!

I've got a team photo under the score-board from post-match but what are the rules on putting up pictures of 16 and 17 year olds on here? i mean none of its lude obviously but are there child protection bits that have to be acknowledged?

I'd say that without their permission, we probably couldn't post up a picture (as they are under 18). Nice thought though!
