Stimpson wallops Falcons as Tigers turn the tide
By Mike
September 22 2002
Tim Stimpson gave one of the finest displays of his illustrious career as he guided Leicester to a resounding victory by 52 points to 9. Newcastle on the other hand looked shell shocked as Tigers made a welcome return to winning ways.
The first quarter of the game was fairly cagey with Stimpson and Wilkinson exchanging penalty kicks. Tigers tightened up their discipline however and began to build a lead with Tim giving a faultless display. A monster 45 metre drop goal from the league's best fullback put Falcons on the back foot and everything was looking rosy.

Things got better when after a bullocking run by Tim, Rod Kafer finally scored from a flowing length of the field attack that saw Welford Road rock with jubilant celebration. That took the score to 28 -9 and the contest was all but over. Try telling the Tigers that. They never slackened and posted three second half tries to earn a crucial bonus point.

Neil Back rumbled over from a trademark catch and drive and the superb Ollie Smith showed phenomenal upper body strength to stay on his feet and score underneath a pile of bodies. The linesman stepped in to award the try - how refreshing to know that some of them do in fact watch the game.

The fourth try of the day was scored by Graham Rowntree who capped a fine performance with a marvellous impression of a Can - Can dancer as he pranced closer to the posts after rounding the Falcon defence on the left wing! To complete the carnival I half expected Darren Garforth to sell a dummy and sprint over from 50 yards - maybe next week.

Tom Tierney and Sam Vesty both gave excellent displays but neither were much troubled by a weak Newcastle back row. Tierney gives his fly half that little bit of extra decision making time with his quick accurate passing. Rod Kafer was back to run the show and looked quite sprightly at times as the backline rediscovered some much needed form. With Glen Gelderbloom also fit again the three quarters look a lot stronger.

Harry Ellis was an interesting choice on the wing but didn't look out of place and showed some nice touches including an impressive catch of a Tierney box kick. Lewis Moody made his seasonal debut and made a big difference to the pack his restart work has been missed and he looked fast and powerful throughout.

Corry had another big game as did Johnno and Kay but there really is no doubt of this weeks man of the match. My traditional post match straw poll usually produces a handful of names but this week the verdict was unanimous. Tim Stimpson was head and shoulders above everyone else and on this type of form can Clive dare to ignore him for the game against the All Blacks?

Clive being Clive the answer is probably yes but England would be a more rounded side by having Tim's presence at full back. Robinson can play in the problem wing position along with Oz, Phil Christophers or James Simpson Daniel. Oh and Graham Rowntree seems to be keen on playing there too!

What a difference a week makes - bring on Bristol it's about time we won down there again.

Leicester Tigers Poll

After poor efforts so far, will Tigers win anything this season ?
