Tigers v London Welsh Match Report

February 10 2013

As your intrepid match reporter was at the Capital FM arena in Nottingham, along with several other terrace dwellers for the Strictly Come Dancing live tour on Friday evening, it seemed appropriate that a Strictly alumnus, Gavin Henson was at Welford Road with London Welsh on Saturday.

Henson’s pre match drop goal kicking practice also providing a curtain raiser for the Leicester Comedy Festival (1st attempt 15 meters to the left of the posts, then 15 meters to the right, then an attempt that was on target, but never got more than 6 inches above the ground…..).

Making their first Premiership visit to Welford Road, Welsh took an early lead from a Gordon Ross penalty, George Ford levelling the scores soon afterwards, and adding another penalty to take the score to 6-3.

Tigers had plenty of dominance through the forwards, but were unable to capitalise, their best attack being brought to an end by a knock-on, in conditions that were making handling difficult for both sides.

Pressure eventually became points however, Ford putting Thompstone away for the first try of the afternoon, Ford adding the conversion, score 13-3.

A pause soon after for a bit of a shoe trying on session for Hawkins, Chuter making a plea for a pair of size 11s, however, just like Cinderella, the shoe eventually fit, and play continued.

Welsh then found themselves down to 14 men as Michael Hills went for an early half time, Tigers only score during their advantage was another Ford penalty, making the score 16-3 at the break.

Second half, and something seemed to have changed at half time.  Tigers were looking sluggish, and Welsh were a little brighter.

An infringement at the ruck from Salvi gave Ross another successful kick, score now 16-6.  Another ruck offence moments later led to a final warning and another Ross penalty, 16-9.

An, erm, somewhat unpleasant injury to Logo had the effect of depowering Tigers scrum, and a penalty soon gave Ross 3 more points to add to his tally, 16-12.

Tigers hit straight back, a superb break from Morris, a couple of phases, and an Allen pass back to Morris who crossed the line made it 21-12, Ford added the two, now 23-12.

A dangerous looking Welsh attack was snuffed out illegally by Jordan Crane, who paid the price with a 10 minute rest.

Welsh looked to take advantage of the extra man, and phase after phase battered away at Tigers’ try line, some superb defending ensured they weren’t able to cross.

With the clock ticking down, Tigers’ third try came from replacement Dan Bowden, conversion missed – 28-12.

The bonus point was not to be however, the final whistle blew soon after, with 28-12 remaining the final score.

Gaz’s man of the match – Tom Croft.

The match was over, but there was still important business to attend to, and the imposing figure of Martin Johnson strode across the Welford Road turf to present Matt Smith with his cap for 100 games as a Tiger.  His father Ian gained that accolade many years before, and was on the pitch to see his son follow in his footsteps, doubtless with a tear in his eye.

Threatened by shadows at night,
And exposed in the light.
