Calvisano: travel, accommodation and beer

Calvisano: how to get there, where to stay and most importantly where to have a beer or four. For those who have never been and the Witchford Tiger and myself hadn't until last season, the little Italian town of Calvisano (population approx 5000) is well worth the effort just for the socialising.
We flew Ryanair from Stansted to Brescia (the airport is at Montechiarri a 10 minute bus ride from Brescia) and caught a local bus which terminates at the main bus station in Brescia.

Transport around Brescia proved very simple, first find your hotel, if your unsure where it is take a taxi. Tickets for the local buses may be purchased from most hotel receptions.

You will need either a bus or taxi to take you to the Railway Station to catch your train to Calvisano. Trains are very frequent but be warned the last train back from Calvisano to Brescia was about 7.30pm. The journey takes around 20 minutes and cost 14,000 lira just under £5 return (transfer that to Euro now).

The train you need is on the Parma line and is clearly signed on the departure board at the station. Calvisano station was like something out of a spaghetti western (no pun intended) single line track and a ramshackle station building.

Turning right out of the station follow the main street for approx three quarters of a mile (in our case the only 2 bars we passed) until you reach a large sports complex set back from the road on the right. This is where Ghial Amotori & Calvisano Rugby play their games.

There is a covered stand on the side you enter and another uncovered on the opposite side. Tickets are only available on match days 2 hours before kick off, as mine were free I have no idea of the cost.

Roughly half a mile from the station on your left you will see a small bar called the Sports Bar, after having a quick taster take the little road at the side, I think it goes under an arch, there is a small gravelled square and a bar right next to it. This is where the locals drink.

We had a great time putting everything on the tab. 6 pints of Amstel, 20 B&H and a large packet of crisps for 30000 lira £10. The locals were brilliant but knew nothing about rugby.

Calvisano is a very quiet place and 80% of the population are O.A.P. There is no accomodation and according to a friend Jim, there are very few eating places. Booking flights and accommodation was all done via the internet, the bus from the airport to Brescia was booked at the airport and cost about £5 return.

Total cost for the week-end:
Hotel £30 a night x2 = £60
Trains to and from Calvisano x £10 Bus fares
£8 Flight incl insurance
£80 Total cost excluding beer and food
£158 Trains x 2 we went on the Saturday to buy our match tickets and find the ground, everywhere was closed so we just went for a beer or four.

Flights are also cheaper now as we booked before Sept 11. For flight bookings check out www.ryanair.co.uk If you are making a weekend of it take the train to Garda and spend some time by the lake it's a beautiful part of the world.

For all who go have a great time,
