TonyTaff's Ten Terrible Teasers
By TonyTaff January 30 2008
As the inclusion of Lesley Vainikolo in the England squad has excited comment in some quarters about the principle of whether he should be considered eligible, I thought I'd give you some questions on the subject of England players born in foreign climes.
By all means post your answers on the message-board (the thread is also found at the bottom of this page), but if you want to win the prize, send me a PM with your answers - the person with the most correct will be bought a pint on the way to Twickers on Saturday; this is most unfair [1] as only the Boy Blunder and I know the route that we will be taking. It might seem, therefore, that the Boy Blunder is the only one in with a chance of scooping the prize, but he is handicapped by not knowing how to switch a computer on.

[1] Life is NOT fair, otherwise Balshaw and Parker wouldn't have got selected.

1. Born in Durban, SA, this prop made his England debut against NZ, has toured with the Lions and featured in a World Cup final.

2. Also born in Durbs, this hooker played for Guy's Hospital and Quins, and gained 5 England caps in the fifties.

3. Born on September 8th, 1964 in Lagos, Nigeria this flamboyant Oxford Blue has played prop for both Moseley and Richmond. His first England cap came against Canada.

[NB In finest selectorial tradition, I have paid no attention whatsoever to which side of the scrum these props might prefer].

4. Born in Hanover, (West) Germany, this garrulous lock, also an Oxford Blue, includes Plymouth Albion and Rosslyn Park amongst his former clubs. His England debut came in 1988.

5. Whilst born in Nairobi, Kenya, this pest of a lock commenced his education in Madrid. He has twice toured with the Lions and has also played in a World Cup final.

6. Born in Kolkata, India, this former Moseley back-row forward made his England debut against Scotland but was replaced after 5 minutes. He went on to earn a further 13 caps in the eighties.

7. This Quins flanker was born in Brisbane, Australia and went on to win 12 England caps, also in the eighties.

8. Born in Benin City, Nigeria, and, like No 3, educated at West Buckland School, in Devon, this back-row forward was first capped by England against Ireland in the nineties; he was then playing for Bath.

9. What, apart from the obvious, links the first 8 questions?

10. What makes you think there would be ten questions?
