Tigers prevail as Sarries slump at the death

And so it goes on. After 44 years and 30-odd attempts that last, elusive bastion of Saracens fallability - Welford Road - remains unbreached as they again came up just short against a powerful Leicester Tigers outfit that was kept within arm's length for 77 minutes, before two howlers at the end made the game safe for the home side, and lost a bonus point for the Men in Black into the bargain.

Tom Varndell's injury-time touchdown finally sealed the deal for the superior Tigers team after an infield Sarries pass hit a head before a Leicester boot hacked the ball over the try line. Dan Scarbrough looked to have won the race to touch down, but as he went to play the ball he slipped over, allowing the league's top try scorer to pounce.

Up to that point, Saracens made a game of what was, in terms of territory and possession at least, a one-sided affair as the home pack dominated at the scrum and in the loose.

So it was surprising that, very much against the run of play, Sarries went into half time of this game - a milestone for Kris Chesney who set a new Premiership appearance record of 194 - 13-9 ahead as Scarbrough squeezed in at the left hand corner following an Andy Farrell surge up the left. Glen Jackson converted from the touchline, adding to his two earlier penalty goals.

Leicester coach Richard Cockerill, who was bouncing around the Crumbie stand like a kid whose dad had taken away his ball every time a decision went against his side, obviously read the riot act to them at the break as they threw everything - kitchen sink, draining board, taps, plug, Cockerill's dummy, the lot - at Sarries and were rewarded with 17 points in the opening 18 minutes of the second period.

Two tries came from the big backs Rabeni and Tuilagi  - who was guilty of butchering at least two further Tigers chances due to his dreadful handling - and it looked like the Tigers would press on and win with ease. To their credit Saracens, living of scraps throughout, fashioned the try of the match as Brent Russell rounded off a marvellous first-phase move from a line-out 40m from the Tigers line. Jackson added the extras to make it 26-20 and then a penalty to narrow the gap to three.

That was as close as Sarries came as Andy Goode, who scored 21 points on the day to take him to the top of the all-time Premiership scoring rankings, kicked a penalty three minutes from the end before Varndell's effort took away the bonus point.

Why were we struggling so much in the scrums? looking at the line-ups we might have expected parity at least.

Jason, as I mentioned on another thread I feel that we lack the physically up front to boss sides. It is interesting that Eddie Jines is reported in the SA press to say someting along the lines of "the law changes will suit NZ more than SA". I understand that to mean that a premium will be put on ball players. We may have good hands but with so little ball we don't have the chance to use them. Harsh as it might sound we need to recruit some hard men who can make the hard yards and hurt players like leicesters forwards. Much as I find Cockerill loathsome I have to say I think that beasting forwards is sometimes the way to go.

I am reminded of how 'cattle dogs' are trained in Oz. They are beaten to within an inch of their lives. The reason? Well when they work with herds of cattle they are going to get kicked hard several times a day. If they can withstand the beating they will be ok with the cattle. An untrained dog would just run away and the owner would have to shoot him.

So while I'm all in favour of having good ball players in the pack I also believe in having hard nuts there.

Pretty fair match report Large. I am not sure if it was true, but it seemed that every time we had possession in the Tiggers half, we came away with some points.

as the game went on, I felt that that extended to every time we had possession outside our own 22.

it was a bit unfortunate that Rod's inside pass after securing the ball from the kick-off was not expected. it was pretty much the only mistake the backs made all game.

I though the return of Faz really made a difference and the Leicester defence really did not know how to deal with him. If we can repeat that same performance next week - on a bigger pitch against a less robust pack, I think we have a great chance

Is it just me, but from where I was (the wrong end of the Crumbly) it was Russell who made the horlicks that lead to Varndell's try. Both the Llarge one and the 'fish say Scabs.

...and last week Penney's forward pass seemed intended for Russell (who definatley gathered it, played on and touched down), yet every report suggested it was intended for Scabs.

Are they at all related or do I need specs?
