The Black and Red Xmas quiz

Relevant, or not?
By TonyTaff
December 22 2008
To while away the festive season, here's a quiz in which all the questions are themed 'Black and/or Red'. Questions will be added over the holiday season, and answers are invited by personal message. There will be bonus points for the first answer received to each question, and even more bonus points for any early correct answers! There will be a glittering prize for the winner.

Question 1: [An easy one to start (look it up on t'internet, if you must)] Who scored the first ever try in a Heineken Cup final?

Question 2: Which national team, which plays in Black & Red, were beaten twice by Brazil in RWC 2011 qualifiers in October 2008?

Question 3: a) Who was the first ‘black’ man to be capped by England at Rugby Union?

And b) for which Rugby League club team did he subsequently play?

Question 4: At Sarries, we are used to the chant ‘Allez les Noirs’, but which team, which recently returned to the domestic top flight, is referred to by its supporters as ‘Les Rouges et Noirs’?

Question 5: Members of which club might type: "the players of this Club typically take the field in Black and Red"?

When further questions are added, they will be announced on the messageboard tail to this frontpage item.

Update

Following a request from a participant, I am prepared to accept submissions by SMS, for those who may not have PM access over the holiday period. If you request my mobile number by PM, I'll forward it to you by PM (this service will cease at 1.45 pm on Dec 24th, and resume on Dec 26th), so get those PMs in pronto, if you want to use the service.

The answers:

1. Thomas Casteignede - playing in Red that day, for the normally Black 'n' Red Toulouse.

2. Trinidad & Tobago.

3. a) James (Jimmy) Peters

   b) Barrow (followed by St Helens)

4. Toulon (RC Toulonnais) [NB the 'recently returned' bit - hardly relevant to Toulouse, is it?]

5. Blackheath [The clue was in the capital 'C' used mid sentence - they call themselves 'The Club']

Thanks to all who took part!

RTFQ - please don't post any serious attempts at an answer on here, however. (You know who you are, PeteW winking smiley )

Sensible punts should be sent by PM (some have already come in).

Humorous observations, or even critiques of the quiz, are welcome, here, however smiling smiley

Well for my research for this, I decided to revisit some of sky's coverage of the comp over the last few years, presuming the answer would be there - so i've come to the conclusion that it was either Paul O'Connell, or Stuart Barnes in a Munster shirt> As far as I can tell from it, only Munster have ever won it, so my guess must be right?

Close there, RobH, but this question is both 'Black and Red' - so the answer would have to be "Paul O'Connell/Stuart Barnes 'blacked up' in the manner of the 'Black and White Minstrels'" winking smiley

Might Barnes not have been red in the face from having to run about a bit?

Shhh, mun! Don't tell the others that the second question has been posted winking smiley

Keep your eyes peeled for a league table, after round 1, and news of the disciplinary panel's verdict on PeteW.

Anyone who hasn't already done so, may still answer Q1 - there are four points for a win still available. Furthermore, even wrong answers can win losing bonus points smiling smiley

Yes, you can attempt each question twice. The infernal rules are now available on the front page article which will eventually hold the league table.

See the announcement thread of that item for the link.

Many of you are making the obvious mistake. One spotted the obvious trap, but then went on to ignore another clue in the question.

As always 'RTFQ'. This stands for Read The F...ing Question [mortarboard smiley]
