The Black and Red Xmas quiz league table, updated.

Official? You joking?
By TonyTaff
December 23 2008
The scoring system is complex and arbitary, a hybrid between the IRB's craziest ideas and Have I Got News for You. Needless to say, the editor's decision is final, though Wade Dooley has been brought in to hear any appeals against disciplinary action.

The scoring system works something like this:

Four points for a correct answer.

Two bonus points for the first answer, if it is correct.

One bonus point for the first answer, if it is wrong.

One bonus point for the second correct answer.

Two bonus points for any answer considered sufficiently amusing to merit inclusion in an end-of-quiz review.

[Participants can have up to two attempts at each question.]

Disciplinary panel verdict

The Disciplinary Panel has now met to consider the case of PeteW (the Player), who posted a correct answer to Q1 on the messageboard in contravention of the quiz rules requiring answers to be submitted by confidential means.

Preliminary submissions were heard on behalf of participants who felt that their bonus points for timely answers should not be withdrawn as a result of the player's actions which were beyond their control.

The panel concluded that timeliness bonus points awarded to other players in round 1 should be allowed to stand. These are: Large 2, Alan E 1.

The facts of the case were not disputed, however the panel recived a submission on behalf of the player that he had submitted the correct answer on a timely basis and that 2 bonus points should be awarded for this, notwithstanding any penalty that the panel may impose for the breach.

The panel concluded that the player's win (4 points) and bonus points (2) should be allowed to stand, but that the offence was at the high end of offending and that a points deduction of 4 points should be imposed.

The player has until midnight Jan 6 to appeal, provided that the appeal is submitted by PM or SMS and is accompanied by answers to all subsequent questions.

Players are reminded that each participant has two opportunities to get the answer right, which increases the probability that everyone will 'win' in each round, if not necessarily on a timely basis. Bonus points are likely to prove crucial.

Plausible strategies include using the second attempt to secure humour bonus points; or using the first attempt for humour, and the second for a researched answer whilst ignoring the timeliness bonus points. One participant has even burned one attempt on a hopelessly wrong answer, filed before the question was posted, in order to secure a 'losing' timeliness bonus point whilst incommunicado over Xmas.

End of Season

The league will close at midnight on January 6th (Wise Men, and Women, are supposed to finished their work by then). While the leader at that point may be considered the winner at that point, the organiser reserves the right to introduce a post-season play-off of any format of his choosing, and to change it arbitrarily - just like real life ;)

I should ask the BBC lawyers for advice on the legality of the approach and get personal counselling on handling competitive angst from the judges of Strictly Come Dancing.

Austin Healey can advise on hair extensions.

Does the answer to the question "what do I think" still have a black and red theme to it ?

Red with anger and in a black mood?

'The what do you think' bit is an innovation of sportnetwork central. It appears whenever we announce a new front page article.

Notice of the disciplinary panel now added.

I'm still working on the league table. Foolishly, I decided to build a spreadsheet to do this. For the last 15 years, I have had minions to do such things for me, and my spreadsheet skills have sadly deteriorated. It would have been quicker to write things down on a piece of paper, and manually add up the scores (I'm not so senile that I can't still add winking smiley).

[I've got as far as a league table in a random order. If anyone would like to give me an idiot's guide as to how, in excel, I can get that to reorder into a descending list by points scored, I'd be grateful.

Xmas is coming smiling smiley ]

To sort a table you need to

Firstly save the spreadsheet in case it goes wrong

a) select the whole area of the table
b) select the data tab at the top of the spreadsheet
c) select sort
d) select the column that you wish to sort by
e) click ascending or descending

Any bonus points for the above ?

You can do it via a macro but that requires more explaining

I've granted you one bonus point for that, Graeme!

If it doesn't work, though, the disciplinary panel will fine you at least one (Sm6)

You had answered only one question at the cut-off point. Please note the timestamp on the league table, and consult the time(s) of your sent PMs to verify this.

I can confirm that your successful entries for Q2 & 3a have subsequently been collated. I've not started on 3b, yet smiling smiley

A new league table, a mere 4.5 days out-of-date, has now been added.

Graeme gets two bonus points for composing instructions that even this eejit can follow, and Viks gets one for sending in an xl template. These will be recorded as 'humour' bonus points, as I can't be @rsed to add another column to the table.

New league table added. There's a three-way tie at the top, but the fourth-placed player can take the lead alone with a win in the game in hand.

Darragh Girl, who last played before Xmas, can also move into contention if she wins her many games in hand ...

... but if she's gone on holiday to Gaza City, she may not get the chance winking smiley

Let me see....an end of season play off regime.........how about....The player that tops the table after Round 22 will automatically qualify for home advantage in the Semi Finals against the player that finishes 4th.............. The player that finishes 2nd will qualify for home advantage in the other Semi Final against the player that finishes 3rd........winners of both Semi finals meet in the final !

Nah....that will never work.

How about slamming the car door to wake up the neighbors ?
