SAIL vs Sale

Fin. End of.
By Rupes
March 1 2009
For 80 minutes on Sunday afternoon, on-the-field rugby for Saracens again became the focus of players and supporters alike. Following probably the most stressful week in the club's long history, Saracens beat Sale Sharks 24-23, a missed conversion from Sale's Lee Thomas being just the bit of luck you occasionally need to cement a tight win.

From the rousing welcome given to the players as they ran out, it became obvious that this game was a bit more than "just another match".   An early Jackson penalty was soon enhanced with a try remarkable for the running line of Alex Goode to create the quick ball, along with the fine offload from Chris Jack to enable Nick Lloyd to score the first try.   The reactions of both players and fans told anyone watching what the score meant to them all.

But it wouldn't be Saracens without the occasional blip; an over-deliberate kick from Jackson was charged down not 5 minutes later, with Dean Schofield galloping 50m to touch down for Sale.  Lee Thomas, kicking in place of Charlie Hodgson who was injured in the warm-up, added the extras and it was suddenly 8-7.   Once half time was reached, Sarries had taken an 14-10 lead, uncontested scrums were de rigeur (via injuries to both tryscorer Lloyd and Cencus Johnston) and both back rows were playing out of their respective skins.   No doubt, Saracens were "up for it", Sale (Manchester) knew that they had a game on their hands.

The half time break was enlivened only by watching Moses nearly tip the entire contents of the tombola over the pitch, plus a certain R.Hill sprinting along the sidelines.  One of those statements is true.

Although Saracens probably had not scored as many points in the first half as their pressure and play merited, the lead was well deserved.  Sharks' had the first opportunity to score in the later of the two forty minute halves, full back McLeod passing the ball to the touch judge when a simple pop to the supporting David Doherty would have taken advantage of the 2-on-1 situation presented to him.   But Saracens did put the first points on the board, a niggly set of rucks and mauls eventually being ended by sympathetic passes from the outstanding Van Heerden and the bizarrely-underrated-by-some Jack to send Noah Cato flying in for his 9th try of the season.   21-10 with the conversion and Saracens again in control.

Despite that control, Sale (non-boat version) kept coming at Saracens, with both Thomas and number 8 Lobbe at the heart of everything they did.  With 20 minutes left, Thomas slid underneath Haughton to touch down in the corner, 21-15 as the bonus 2 points drifted wide.   Two minutes later, 21-18, Alex Goode lucky not to see yellow as he obstructed flying winger Doherty.   Another Jackson penalty, further replacements (including a welcome return to the team for Kris Chesney, "la carte jaune monsieur?  Mais non!") and some concerted Sale (non-yachting) pressure made the score 24-18 with three minutes to go, at which point the visitors took advantage of some slack Saracens work at the rear of the ruck to allow Dean Schofield to score his second try, 24-23.  The fat lady got off her seat in the East Stand, gargled, and started the warm-up arpeggios.  Sadly, she must have put Lee Thomas off as he hooked the simple conversion to the left of the uprights.

When Rodd Penney shoved David Doherty into touch with 0:00 on the clock, the collective sigh of relief from the players and supporters could be heard from miles away.  After a traumatic week, the players of Saracens had re-grouped, taken it upon themselves to put in a performance of which they and the supporters could be proud and take the 4 points.   The group huddle which took place after the final whistle spoke volumes about what is happening at the club - injured players limped on, coaches, other people involved in the club, all stood bound as one on the pitch.  And once they had spoken in that private huddle, the togetherness of the 22 players as they came over to the Lower Rous shone through.

The message was very clear - whatever else happens, the players, coaches and support staff have stood together over this week. the week which Eddie Jones has described as "the worst week I've ever had in rugby" and today was a small reward.  It wasn't quite a message to SAIL, but it was mighty close - the club spirit is alive and well, the players and the supporters care about this club massively and the heart will not be ripped out of it.

Stories now circulate about the new DoR taking the job "only...because I see it as a challenge to create a team that will be supported by South Africans abroad".   Stories now circulate about Eddie Jones being "100% disappointed" by the events of the week and the direction the club seems to be taking.  Even the programme seemed to be unsure which way to go, with Nigel's column seemingly being a re-hash of old material and Edward's column using the immortal phrase "the management will work to produce a club that....treats it (sic) players better than any club in the world".  Irony?  After the events of the last seven days and their response today, the players deserve far better than the treatment some have received this week and a whole lot more.  Who knows what will be the outcome of the current issues, but today's 4 points were about club spirit, determination and togetherness - well done everyone, mission accomplished.

Nothing too controversial - but an interesting afternoon nonetheless.

Just curious - is the ref any relation of the Sale scrum half?

no - just as Dean Richards (the ref) is not related to Dean Richards (coach of Harlequins).

Thanks Rupes, it was a great fun to watch, whatever the emotions the players might be feeling. The team deserved to win and they all played well.

If that match doesn't bring the first timers back for more I don't know what will. (Maybe not a classic match for the afficianados, but lots of entertainment value, which is very important for newbys.)

All things considered (England's performance as well), I though the numbers held up well.

It was as if Eddie had finally released the shackles on the back-line, and they certainly responded in style. Considering we gave them 12 points, and blew several good openings it could have been a comfortable 5 pointer.
Can anyone explain why, with about 10 minutes left when one of their guys knocked forwards an up-and-under and a Sale player clearly in front of this hacked the ball away, we never got a penalty?
It does seem an area of great inconsistency amongst refs, yet this was a pretty clear cut one. Other than that, I thought the ref did OK.
A fantastic effort from the team, and whilst it may be too late for top 6 we can at least hope not to slide down the table.

Our boys played really attractive rugby yesterday. Goode, Cato and Del played like it was a training game...........in that I mean there was no fear, just great skill and flair in their attacks.
The best bit of the day for me was when the LLoyd try was given and Cairnsy was firing up the Rous right in front of me on the north end 22............he was really buzzing. Being a keen fellow Liverpool fan like Matt it reminded me of Steve Gerrard to the crowd in Istanbul on the Champions League victory night.......pure passion for the club.

I saw a lot of players psyching the crowd up, Skirving did it when Cato scored in front of the South Stand too, looks like they are really trying to get people into it/feeling it themselves!

Was great to see the whole playing/coaching squad in a huddle at the end of the game, made me well up a bit!

I think Ratuvou must have had a good bo***cking from Eddie during the week, him and Wikus were tackling anything that moved!

I don't agree with the 'ref had a good game' comment, the penalty he gave for crossing when we were on the attack was when Kyriacou came through the same hole as the guy in front, but behind him, no crossing. Also when Goodey ran the ball straight out, the ref had his arm out for advantage, but then gave them a lineout!

Good game though, and good to see the boys back on winning ways (albeit by a point!)

Also, why does Goodey not kick when Jackson is having an off day? He is also a high percentage kicker.

I thought the same at the end of two seasons ago, Jacko seemed to be missing everything but we had Farrel on the pitch for most of the games.

How did we contrive to lose a defensive scrum (toward the end) when they were uncontested?

TT
Confusion reigned when the ref lifted both arms to indicate that the ball was "out". The first Sale back-row man was quickly tied back in but then Schofield merely walked round the back and lifted the ball out from among the feet and eased himself over the line. All very suspicious and one of the few dodgy calls I thought Tim W made. It would have been a travesty if the conversion had been a success.

Personally I would prefer it if Goodey was left to worry about just playing his FB role without the added pressure of kicking. His time will come with the boot so in the meantime let him develop into the world class FB he shows the potential for.

Ta, Sinclair.

From the playbook '101 bizarre ways to give away a try'!

Presumably, we had the novice on as scrum-half at the time?

It would be unfair to blame Mickey W for this - but difficult to imagine an old campaigner like Marshall not reacting differently.(Sm147)

Although he signalled 'crossing' the penalty was for obstruction, Goode IIRC, and was justified. Just very annoying to use the wrong signal.

Yes, I totaly agree, it would be unfair to blame Mickey for this. He hasn't played that much, but when he does he is a real credit to the club. Shame he is going.

I must say that I thought Justin Marshall had a good game and certainly put in some good tackles, one of which was try saving.

Actually, I think you will find Marshall was at scrum half when Sale scored their last try, picking up at the back of the scrum.

The ball should have been cleared to touch from the earlier scrum and MW is innocent! Marshall was subbed off immediately after the score for MW

Marshall did exactly the same thing at Frankins the other week and we were very lucky that Saints did not get at least a penalty out of it.
