So no reporter this week. Instead a report based on Tweets from both sides and hopefully pulled together into a passable report from Kingston Park. Wish I was there but Easter Sunday meant it was never going to be an option.
“Saracens name their team to face Falcons rugby. Will Fraser (“I just can’t wait for Sunday”) & Al Hargreaves return and Alex Goode also back. Wiggy proud to be captain”. “Adam Powell starts against old club Saracens”. “Wowza! Haway the lads. Leave nothing on the pitch”.
(For anyone interested, nice picture of Ben Ransome’s breakfast and a discussion around Owen Farrell’s ears)
Apparently Scott MacLeod & Richard Mayhew both hit 50 appearances against Sarries and Falcons definitely stay up if they win. Rhys Gill looking forward to his first game back.
Mouritz Botha was having a scrumptious looking barbeque, Wiggy and Goodey were devasted that Liverpool look like winning the footie title.
Falcons wish everyone a Happy Easter (kind of them) and apparently conditions are perfect. KP opens at 11.00. What is Kevin Pietersen doing there anyway?
OOO good idea – a ladies match before the men’s game. North East women seem to be on top. But Oh look – FT score Falcons ladies 17 Saracens ladies 25. “Falcons Rugby developing women’s, a positive step forward for equality. Will all other Premiership clubs follow suit?” Sadly I doubt it.
(And Brad’s gone all Greek. Christos Anesti & egg tapping. While Schalk’s gone motor racing)
Sarries agree that “it’s a lovely day here in the North East”.
Falcons want their season ticket holders to renew – no refund offer if they stay up though!
Melbourne Minxes on tour forming the Guard of Honour.
And the teams – Sarries as expected, 13 changes from last week. “And a massive thank you to the Sarries fans who have made the trip North. A fair few fez’s on show!”
Wiggy and Welch lead their respective teams out. “Back to Black” could work for both sides.
Early try for Sinotti. “Neat inside pass from Powell unleased Tait through the gap. Wilson (M) passed to Sinotti who fended off 3 men to score ”. “Scorching break down the left wing"
Hodgson (J) misses conversion- this could get confusing - 2 Hodgsons, potentially 3 Wilsons!.
Wilson (J) gets yellow carded for a collision in the air. “Took Alex Tait out in the hair(!)”
“Try Streather. Fine play by Goode & Wigglesworth in the build up. Hodgson (C) Conversion. First ever Premiership try”. “Newcastle 5-7 Saracens”. “It’s like he’s never been away as Fraser earns his side a penalty at the breakdown” “Falcons pulling the maul down”. 30m out up steps Charlie Hodgson who makes no mistake”. Wilson (J) returns from the bin to the field.
Barnes on (not Stuart I hope – they can’t be that desperate) Cato off. “Looks like the change was due to injury as Cato’s started well.” “Falcons penalty at the scrum? Andrew Small has other ideas and gives it to Saracens. Justice done as Saracens knock on.” “Saracens are looking the more dangerous of the 2 sides”.
“Messy lineout, Falcons have it…Saracens penalised for not releasing tackler. Andrew Small has reversed the decision. #makeyourmindup”. “Saracens nearly in again but Tagicakibau spills Goode’s pass” “Hodgson (J) going for goal with a pen just inside Sarries’ half. He makes it!!!!!!!. Newcastle 8-10 Saracens” HT
“Hodgson (C) gets us started. Sloppy start by the Falcons straight from kick-off. Pen to Saracens” 8-13. “Hodgson (C) marches his side down into Falcons territory with a booming touch finder. Sarries on the attack. Sarries penalised for going over the top at the ruck and Falcons clear their lines”. “Go Sarries” (@SchalkBrits)
“Great scrummaging from Falcons”. “Barrington replaced by Gill” (S) “And another great Falcons scrum earns the penalty. Hodgson (J) shot at goal dead centre 35m out.” “Hodgson(J) penalty missed”. #worryingtimesatthescrum.
“Hodgson’s (J) dap (!) through is dealt with”. “dab*” (?,!) . “It’s a good hit out for the returning Fraser as he is replaced by Justin Melck” #germaninternationalrugbyplayer. “Attendance 4,878. Thank you for your support” .
“Joel (aka Hodgson (J)) with another chance to close the gap with the boot. Lands it! Newcastle 11-13 Saracens” “Sub Petrus du Plessis replaces Matt Stevens.”
“Sinotti’s through, go on……. Ohhh Sinotti’s pulled down with a head high tackle and pen is awarded to Newcastle. Surprised Mr Small didn’t pull out a card for the high tackle. Sinotti was clean through on the near side.” “Ransome replaces Wilson J on the left wing”
“Great defence by the Falcons.” “It’s a tight and tense affair here at Kingston Park. Hayden Smith returns to Premiership action for the first time since Feb 2012 ”
“Big work from Saracens eight gives Hodgson C a shot at goal” “Falcons scrum struggling now”. Newcastle 11-16 Saracens.
“Try for Saracens. An absolute sucker punch. Ben Ransome picks up Sinotti’s loose pass” “and races 60m to score after collecting an errant Joel Hodgson pass. Hodgson (C) converts”. “That’s what you call a Captain’s knock. Great performance by Richard Wigglesworth who is replaced by Ben Spencer”
“TMO time. Has Alex Tait stretched over….? Try is awarded. Kick to come. Godman converts. Newcastle 18-23 Saracens”. “Last minute. Big effort lads” “That’s it, Full-Time. Mark McCalls men come away from the northeast with a hard-fought win.”
“Warren Fury scored the decisive losing bonus point try and not Alex Tait as tweeted by the lot of us on the press deck”.
“Great win this afternoon. Was awesome to be back out there with the lads. On to a huge game next week” (@will_fraser89). “Great support up at Newcastle today and good to get the win”(@ben_ransom) “good to get the win up in the toon. Always a tough place to go. Great to catch up with powelly, noah cato & andy saul” (@rwiggy9) “Never an easy place to play up in the toon, team put in a big shift and good win. Powelly up to his usual tricks” (‘alex_goode0)
“Pleasure to play against a good team. Just a shame we couldn’t quite get the result” (@powelly1287)
“It was not only a great win for Saracens today up at Kingston park, but for Saracens women who beat their Falcons counterparts 25-17” . “Falcons edge closer to mathematically securing their premrugby status”.
“Great win away at Newcastle, always a tough place to go. Big week ahead. #heineken cup” (@jacksonwray”). TOO RIGHT!
