Meehan Frustrated As Wasps Game Frozen Off
By Glen Leat
January 10 2009
Bath Rugby Head Coach, Steve Meehan, was very frustrated after his team’s match against Wasps at The Rec was cancelled just over an hour before kick-off.

Steve Meehan felt the decision to cancel the match should have been delayed a little longer to give the frozen parts of the pitch time to defrost. He commented that perhaps the decision was swayed by the RFU not wanting to put the French referee in a difficult situation and this forced an earlier decision than was necessary. With a twinkle in his eye, Meehan confirmed to the Sky reporter's mischievous question that this decision would probably suit Wasps more than Bath.

Wasps Head  Coach, Shaun Edwards, was pleased the game was cancelled because he felt it was unsafe and the pitch would have provided too many opportunities for players to get injured. "I wouldn't have let my players play on that pitch because it is dangerous", said Edwards.

Sky reporter, Will Greenwood, was in support of the postponement agreeing with Edwards that players could be injured in certain parts of the pitch. He supported this by demonstrating the famous cricket key test, so beloved by Geoff Boycott, which showed that the key would slide in to the ground quite easily in one spot but just a few yards away the key wouldn't break the frozen surface.

There was some hope the game could be played on Sunday but apparently this is not possible because of difficulty stewarding the ground. It now looks most likely the game will take place at the end of January but this will mean that Bath players involved with England are likely to miss what is always a intense confrontation.
