Rolf's Cartoon Club (RCC) was perhaps the first really funny nickname I came across on the board and it's good that he's stuck around all these years. When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby? I used to follow them half heartedly when I was younger, but really became hooked at the age of 17 in 1994 What made you a supporter? My best friend was a mad-keen Bath fan, and Brian Ashton taught me history and PE, but my real enthusiasm came from bunking off school on a Saturday and catching the train to Bath where I would buy a pint (or have one bought for me as I have always looked about 6 years younger than I am), then sitting on the clubhouse roof or in a tree by the clubhouse entrance to watch the match for free. Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec? Tim Rodber having a brilliant match for Saints, but Bath doing the usual and winning when they really had no right to do so. What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? Hmmm, tricky. Elvis' try against the Irish was pretty good, but in the wrong circumstances, Andy Williams' try at Castle Grim in the Powergen broke a thousand Glawster hearts and put me in a good mood for a couple of weeks, but what really can compare to Bordeaux 1998. I watched it in a pub in Aberystwyth, and wore my Bath shirt with pride that day. What has been your worst moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? I felt pretty low when Borthers left. For me, he epitomized Bath and to me it was almost like the ravens deserting the Tower of London. After recent events, maybe this is a very good analogy...? But my worst moment as a Bath supporter, I think it has to be losing against Bristol at Ashton Gate where Contepomi scored a break-away try (aren't they always the worst kind to concede?), and Bath didn't even come close to winning. It was billed as a must-win game that we didn't, and we looked as if we were on our way out the then ZP and without much of a clue how to come back up. Who do you regard as the best player of all time for Bath? Blimey.... That is a tricky one. I think Mike Catt was/is a rugby genius. His ability to win a match with outrageous class, and also cover a multitude of positions with equal skill puts him top of my pile. Which players from the Golden Decade do you think would be a success in the modern game? Nearly all of them for the simple reason we had a squad of players who were streets ahead of the opposition then, and would have adapted to modern rugby now. To narrow it down to a single player, I'd choose John Hall. He was a master blindside flanker, and could easily ply his trade today as he did then (although he might have to up his pace a little) Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why? Matt Giteau would have ticked all the boxes last season (08-09), but controversially, it would be Dallaglio. He is a player everyone but his own team hate, but he would have galvanized the Bath squad in the early ‘00's when we lacked everything in the forwards and direction as a whole on and off the pitch. How confident are you that Bath Rugby will be at the Rec in five years time? I'm not in ‘the Rec or bust' camp. I love the Rec, but is it really a suitable site for a modern stadium? If they can do it, I am all for it, but as long as Bath Rugby remains in Bath, I don't mind where they play. Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words. Excitement; frustration; passion.

And so to Stir Crazy, someone who drinks, drinks and drinks Bath Rugby: providing it's a G&T of course! When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby? When I moved to Bath in 1983 after being a Brizzle supporter during my student days! Dare I say it, Briz was a good club to be in then too! Alan Morley and Mike Rafter, Mike Fry and Nigel Pomphrey - heady days! What made you a supporter? I've watched rugby since I could stand, watching my dad play scrum half for Esher and LARC in London ( London Advertising Rugby Club!) in the 70's. I joined Slough Rugby Club as a very naïve 16 year old, when Paul (Racy) Rendall was playing there and haven't looked back since! Joined Briz when I moved there, then Bath when I moved here. Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec? (Are you suggesting I was too p***d to remember anything!!!) hahaha. I think it was a Wednesday night when Cardiff were Welsh champions and came over for a record crowd and a record tonking from Bath FC- there was a huge gasp as the floodlights went on a few mins before kick off as people realized how many were in there! The bar was very friendly afterwards - amazed that the players came and freely mixed with the fans, even in those far flung amateur days! What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? Almost too many - apart from the really interesting people/players I've met, probably being in the Parc Lescure in January '98 and being asked by a man( a stranger!) stood on his seat next to me if I would have his babies!!! ( I don't think he meant there and then, but we were both a bit euphoric at that moment!!!!) The whole weekend was amazing and I couldn't speak for over a week on my return. What has been your worst moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? The prolonged agony of the club's future at the Rec - ironic, isn't it that it isn't a match we've lost or the latest drug revelations! (Although losing to Leeds at HQ was pretty gut wrenching as the players didn't even look as if they wanted to be there, right from the off! ) Who do you regard as the best player of all time for Bath ? Different people for different reasons, but I guess I would have to say, on balance, Roger Spurrell Which players from the Golden Decade do you think would be a success in the modern game? Tony Swift (a la Mad Dog, for their sheer work rates) Jerry Guscott (a la Olly Barklay/Shontayne) Graham Dawe (oh, yes, he IS still playing though!) Hally, Hallers, Olly Redman, and probably more. We were, after all, a pretty professional, disciplined outfit then. Much more so than since 1996 anyway! Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why? Martin Johnson for his sheer physicality and on field leadership skills, closely followed by Bill Beaumont because.......... he IS my überhero! How confident are you that Bath Rugby will be at the Rec in five years time? Not confident at all. Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words.

And finally....Andy R, another supporter who always has a beaming smile. When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby? 1995. Got into rugby in the late 80s/early 90s through an old girlfriend's father -watching Rugby Special on a Sunday night, but it wasn't until after the 1995 World Cup, that I decided I'd like to go to a live match. Great memory of Rob Andrew putting the Aussies out with that late drop goal. What made you a supporter? I normally tell people that it was because I lived in Chippenham when I was a youngster (which is true), but the real reason is I rediscovered Bath as an adult around that time (95) and had met my then current girlfriend there. Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec? Last home game of the amateur era (I think!), Bath v Sale 1995, we won by a shed load. Could still change ends in the second half back then. What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? Best moment that I didn't attend: winning the Heineken Cup, What has been your worst moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? Aside from the current cloud of shame, which is definitely the worst moment, the season when we nearly went down and there was talk of merging with Bristol. I found myself wondering who I'd support, but the truth is supporting Bath (for me) is a love affair, and if the club ceased to exist it would be like a painful break-up, so not sure my heart would be in it (supporting another club). Who do you regard as the best player of all time for Bath? Jerry Guscott Which players from the Golden Decade do you think would be a success in the modern game? Guscott, Dawe, Victor, Dan Lyle, Robbo Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why? Martin Johnson or Dayglo. Since I've been supporting Bath we've lacked that leader that the players would walk through walls for and that would not accept defeat. Both MJ and LNBD had that quality and if we'd had a player like either of those I think we would have converted some of those nearly seasons we've had over the last few years (I'm thinking of 2003/4 particularly). How confident are you that Bath Rugby will be at the Rec in five years time? I have faith in the work that the RFOTR are doing and believe that land swap will work out, so very confident (perhaps blind optimism on my part). Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words. Best Day Out |
