So What Made You Support Bath Rugby? Part Four
By Glen Leat
June 24 2009
ERE as a website has been in existence since 2000 and as a concept since 1991 and over the years I’ve got to know many people whom otherwise I wouldn’t have met. We meet, we chat but for most I don’t know why or how they came to support Bath Rugby and I thought now was the time to address this
I looked through my e-mail address book and sent out a list of questions. Here is the fourth series of replies from my ERE friends. I'd like to hear from many others so, if you want to supply me with your responses to the questions please e-mail me at glenleat@btinternet.com.

It's now the turn of the voice of reason on our board Mr Fudpucker

When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby?

1989

What made you a supporter?

My two boys kept on about going to see a football match.  The choice was Bristol City/Rovers or Swindon so that put an end to those immoral thoughts!!  Having played rugby at school, and only ever watched the 5 Nations on TV, I had heard that Bath were a decent team, so off we went to see Bath International XV play the Public School Wanderers at the Rec reffed by Clive Norling.  We all enjoyed the experience so much we joined the Club as members (remember those days?) and after paying £20 or thereabouts, got in every match for free.  That season ended at Twickenham when we beat Tigers and were able to  drive into the West car park and set up the picnic.  Happy days

Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec?

Seeing the Bath team with every player having played at International level, and John Horton playing at the Rec for the last time.

What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby?

The European Final in Bordeaux.  The whole day from flying out of Bristol, to the excellent atmosphere in Bordeaux, to the amazing Brive fans before and after the game, the build up in the stadium, that set of defensive scrums, that try, the samba band playing on empty at the airport, and finishing off the day with large G&Ts on the flight home.

What has been your worst moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby?

None.  Supporting means just that, although the last few weeks has not been the best time.  Mind you, since retiring to my corner in the snug, I have had a great time chatting to those EREites whose moderate views seem to be similar to mine.  It's been a bit crowded at times, but we will all be back in the public bar very soon I reckon !!  Will "Fud's corner" be adopted into the ERE lexicon?

Who do you regard as the best player of all time for Bath?

Martin Haag.  Have had the pleasure of meeting Haagy socially a few times, and he epitomizes everything that is Bath. His quote when his contract was not renewed, and he was offered a playing role at Leicester was "I could never put that shirt on, and he settled for Penzance and a coaching role with the Bath Academy.  He did wonders for the Bristol pack and I really hope that he gets to do the same at Bath if and when the opportunity arises.

Which players from the Golden Decade do you think would be a success in the modern game?

Guscott, Robbo, Dawe, Fallon, Webb, Perry and Catt

Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why?

Serge Blanco in his prime.

How confident are you that Bath Rugby will be at the Rec in five years time?

Quite.  My optimistic nature in (in sport) tells me that if it goes down to the wire, common sense will prevail.  There surely is pressure being applied from the business community in Bath to make a difference.  I am convinced that much goes on behind the scenes that we punters never hear about, and nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing Worthy heading off with his forked tail stuck up his ........................... or at the very least between his legs.

Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words.

Saturday's with friends.

So it's on to that great man from the south, Mr "Huxster" Huxtable. A man who knows his forwards and was sorely missed in Moz matches after his appearance in Moz One.

When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby?

When Graham Dawe left Launceston to go to Bath 1985 I believe.

What made you a supporter?

An interest in one of our boys grew into support so that by the time he ha left there was no one else.

Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec?

Wet Cold and a win against Leicester

What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby?

Last week (the resignations), prior to that the moments prior to Elvis's try against London Irish when I thought we were relegated.

Who do you regard as the best player of all time for Bath?

Mr G Dawe need you ask, no one epitomised rugby and Bath at the time like him and I doubt anyone ever will.

Graham Dawe, Jerry Guscott, Ben Clarke, Tony Swift, Audley Lumsden, Richard Hill, Barrel

Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why?

Any Player could only be Campese !!! If only English Dilly Dally, hate hate hate him but what a player !!!

How confident are you that Bath Rugby will be at the Rec in five years time?

Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words.

World Rugby Mecca

If you are on an away trip and enjoying the hospitality of a Supporters' Club coach, the noisy one at the back is likely to be Mike-S.

Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words.
 Life, Passion, Everything

Let's here from Rich L

When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby?
About 18 yrs ago. Came down to go to a beer festival on the Friday & then watch Bath next day.

What made you a supporter?

Enjoyed that first game so much, came back week after week, and the following season bought a season ticket - I have no family connections with Bath - live in Herefordshire, but with such a great venue backdrop, why would you not return?

Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec?
It was against Leicester, no idea what the score was, I was still a bit misty from the beer festival. I didn't who would win - in fact, being as I am originally from the Black Country, I leaned towards Tigers, just as a fellow Midlander - I'm better now though.

What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby?

The HC final in Bordeaux - not just the match atmosphere & result, but around the town afterwards, being bought drinks by locals, because we had beaten their rivals - all very special. Also up there is the game at the Rec on the day England won the WC in 2003, I missed the extra time on tele because I had to travel down to Bath, so got to hear that Ian Roberston/ Rob Andrew finish live!

What has been your worst moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby?

The Cup final at Twickers against Leeds a few years back. It just encompassed everything bad about those JC2 years, no excitement, no ideas outside of plan A. Hated every minute of that game.

Who do you regard as the best player of all time for Bath?

Guscott. I watched the dvd of the last Lions tour to SA, when he was, just reminded me of how many times I'd watched him at the Rec disappear on the far side of the field into a crowded of defence, and come out the other side, never quite knowing how it had happened.

Which players from the Golden Decade do you think would be a success in the modern game?
Players like Guscott, who had outstanding talent, and Graham Dawe, who has real determination to succeed - like to thing that Victor would be in there somewhere, too.

Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why?
Martin Johnson - he was evil when he played against us, absolutely evil, but you could only admire him.

How confident are you that Bath Rugby will be at the Rec in five years time?

Very confident. Have to say that I doubted it twelve months ago, but I think there are better noises coming from the Club about what they want. Couldn't possibly watch Bath anywhere else.

Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words.

Saturdays well spent.
