Sparksy was a little reluctant to add her views because she sees herself as a new supporter and is perhaps a little bit in awe of those who have been trundling down to the Rec for many years. My view is we all have to start somewhere and we were all "inexperienced" at some time so, Emma, your views are as valid as anyone else's. When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby? When I was a youngster but only as they were the closest team to where I grew up and I really enjoyed the 6 Nations as a child and used to chat up housemistresses at boarding school to let me watch the matches in their rooms as we were not allowed the tv aerial at certain times. Things grew more intense as a student as I was at Uni in Bath and so had far more access to the matches live. What made you a supporter? Initially it was the location but after my first match and the adrenalin of watching a match live, I was hooked and came down with friends whenever I could encourage anyone to come down with me. Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec? I remember I was in the terracing and it was a freebie that I had managed to get through Bath Spa University. I knew little about the players etc or the other teams but it was really from that moment on that my passion for the sport grew. What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? Bawling like a baby when we lifted the ECC Cup the season before last - I was nowhere near as involved with all things Bath Rugby as my parents were not and so I don't know much about the early years from 'first hand' Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why? Jonny Wilkinson I'm sorry I still see him as GOD Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words.

Next we have Lesley, known on the board as The Holdways who appears to like a drink or two as she always says "My glass is half full coz I drank it". When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby? January 1998 - my second game was in Bordeaux. My husband's mate who used to go to all games with him moved to Norwich so I became him for the rest of the season luckily none of the stewards checked to see that I was a Mrs rather than a Mr!! Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec? Not the first game except it was cold and the chap over the loud speaker said it was colder in Bordeaux so we took heavy coats etc and the weekend turned out so glorious that we sat outside drinking wine and eating pate in t shirts! The game, atmosphere and weekend were fabulous. I love the European away trips, sitting with a group of people who have become good friends and watching exciting games. I loved the last season which whilst there were games that were so frustrating because we could not kick there were moments of brilliance like Belly's try, the kick into the corner in the dying minutes by James which lead to us beating Leicester at home but winning the Heineken Cup in Bordeaux would come top. Losing to Leicester in the quarter finals this year after the trip up to watch it and then all this hullabaloo over the drugs and the speculation. Still onwards and upwards is the only way forward. Jerry Guscott has to be one of the best. I am afraid I do not really remember much about that golden decade cause it was really before I took a big interest in the sport. My husband says Jerry would probably be just as brilliant now if he were playing for the team as he was then. I wanted Brian O'Driscoll a few years ago cos he was fast! Fairly confident - we have to be really because otherwise I shall probably not be watching live rugby on a regular basis if they move away especially to somewhere like Swindon. Good Saturday Afternoons

Here's the answers from Alibev, who used to be our Sale reporter but thankfully has returned to the comfort of the West Country... When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby? |
Here's someone who describes himself as not posting too often but lurking a lot.... OBinExile When did you first start supporting Bath Rugby? In the 60s sometime. I didn't really support - I was dragged along by my dad for a bit of male-bonding. We'd stand in the old flowerpot stand, although I'd sneak off around the back and play footie with a couple of other lads. It was only when I went up to the grammar, and caught a rugby ball for the first time, and the nerve-endings connecting my brain to my feet addled and I was hooked on the game. Kept programmes from those days - so not sure whether I remember watching the players or just remember their names from the programme. Moved, in the 70s around to the riverside stand where we stood for 10-15 years on the 10 metre line away from the clubhouse, up against the fence around the pitch. What made you a supporter? I lived in Bath, it was obvious. My dad was clearly keen on getting me interested in a team sport - he had been a Cheltenham supporter in his youth, while my mum had a season ticket for Kingsholm throughout her teens. What made me go regularly? the camaraderie. Stood with the same bunch of guys week in week out, knowing all the little in jokes, etc. The team went from being ok, to being exciting but without any forwards and losing those important cup games, through to becoming invincible and, now, back to being exciting. I left Bath in 1979. Support would probably have waned - if it hadn't been for 'ERE the magazine and now ERE the website. That same level of camaraderie that was what kept me going in the 70s is also now evident, most of the time, on ERE. Can you remember anything about the first game you ever saw at the Rec? No - it may well have been against Cheltenham, or Clifton, or OMTs or some other of those teams that have disappeared over the horizon into oblivion/contented amateurism. What has been your best moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? The cup final where we went behind to Wasps by some considerable amount, then clawed our way back to win. Never in doubt. Finding the ERE website. My support was probably at its lowest ebb when Bath won the European Cup - so not that great a moment for me. What has been your worst moment as a supporter of Bath Rugby? Not making it into the Cup in one season in the 70s when our backs were flying (replaced by Exeter), being knocked out by some northern team (Morpeth/Wilmslow) in an early round in another season, if I remember correctly up at Combe Down. Oh boy. The aftermath of the England Wales game where Wade Dooley got sent off - and 3 Bath players were also banned (Dawe, Chilcott and Hill) for acting aggressively or something. Who do you regard as the best player of all time for Bath? Always had a soft spot for John Horton - was so gutted when Stuart Barnes replaced him. But, in terms of class, must have been Jerry Guscott. Which players from the Golden Decade do you think would be a success in the modern game? Guscott, Halliday, Mike Beese, Chris Martin (he was always a big strong runner - would probably have fitted in well into the gym monkey era??), David Sole, Richard Hill, Ben Clarke, Simon Geoghagan, wow most of them really. There were a few that wouldn't probably have knuckled down - David Trick springs to mind, I imagine Jim Waterman would have been on the physios couch rather too frequently! Which opposition player (from any era) would you like to have moved to Bath and why? JPR Williams, not least cos my mum would have come down as well. Mervyn Davies - cos he was my first rugby hero, then Andy Ripley for similar reasons. Not sure that they'd have helped the club mind. How confident are you that Bath Rugby will be at the Rec in five years time? Given speed of progress - very. Am hopeful that the RFOTR have helped to push novel ideas forward that will allow the CC to agree to the development. But then, what do I know, living up here in Scotland! Describe what Bath Rugby means to you in three words. Passion, Roots, Hope.
