JP and Graham
It is about a small group of more mature gentlemen, cycling from Sixways to Kingston Park. Known as the “Silly Old Fools on Bikes
What and why can be answered together
The Silly Old Fools are either Granddads, Grandma’s or in my case more than old enough to have several grandchildren try to raise money for a really worthwhile charity Acorns Children’s Hospice.
We have a collective age of several 100 years, having lived life to the full and beyond. However children have a long way to go and a lot of living to do. Acorns Hospice cares for children who have life limiting illnesses. It is not just the children who need this care but also the families. Many of the children will never experience the delights of growing up, the pleasure in travelling to distant shores meeting new friends. Many are not able to physically take part as we have many many years.
Grandparents are probably the softest and most emotional about their grandchildren and will do anything to help. This is one way we can give back to some very needy children the love and affection we have tasted over our many years and if we can bring some pleasure and excitement to a young life it will all be worth it.
So, we are OFF to Newcastle.
It is almost 300 miles, it will be unbelievably cold, wet and miserable, and when sat on a 2 inch wide piece of rubber it will probably be very painful. However every mile will be worth all the effort if we can raise some funds.
We are being supported by the club, the players, Connaught’s and the county council. Ben Gotting and Gavin Quinnell have been giving us lots of moral support and advice, having visited Acorns on several occasions to bring that huge smile to their faces,
We will set off from Sixways on Jan 1st at 10:00 it would be great if some of you guys could come along and send us off in style. We have 6 days to get there, having planned in 5 stops along the way, Tamworth, Mansfield, Pontefract, Scotch Corner and Washington. We will be arriving at Kingston Park in time for the kick-off. Falcons will be introducing us to the crowd at halftime. We hope to visit as many local rugby clubs along the way.
We have all be in training now for several weeks since we first planned this back in July. Here is a picture of Graham Beech and JP coming in to a refreshment stop.
We have our own web site which we will keep up to date as we travel up to Newcastle with images, stories and individual blogs/diaries the route can be seen as a whole.
Children’s Hospices get no funding from central or local government it is up to us to provide the funds to keep them operating. Acorns provides care for children from Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and the whole of the West Midlands and they depend on US.
£10,000 will provide 10 families with 10 days respite care
You can all help by donating a round of drinks this Christmas to Granddads for Acorns.
How can I donate? In several ways:
9 Stuart Rise
Red Hill Lane
Worcester
WR5 2QQ
Together we can make a difference to some very young lives. If we can bring a smile to a little face this Christmas won’t it all have been worth while?
Whilst we are enjoying our Christmas fare, presents and having a jolly old time please spare a thought for the children who are not so fortunate.
To end a happy note, because I can assure you the children I have met want to be happy and are constantly smiling, one of the young boys will be joining us for the final leg into Kingston Park so I want form you all the loudest cheer of the day for this young man who absolutely adores rugby and the Warriors.
