On paper this looks like a home banker for us, but these banana skins come along every so often and teach us that nothing should be taken for granted. Bristol have had some poor results recently and a double defeat by Northampton will have done nothing to ease the nerves of the west country club. With sponsorship needed and an on off move to other grounds it would seem that there is enough to think about without worrying the players with such mundane issues of starting to get results. We at Worcester complain about the Mud in Offerton lane and that the disabled car parking is 100 yards from the Slick Systems Stand. And that the bars don’t serve the beer quick enough. Puts things into perspective doesn’t it.
Worcester will enter this match on a relative high. The new Slick Systems stand will be officially opened, with the entrance to the ground looking polished. Visitors must now glance across the car parks and entrance to the club and realise that this club is getting there in leaps and bounds. Then they will look on the team sheet and see names like Latham, Tuitupou, Gear, and Sanderson. They will also see Mullan and Pennell and Bowley, but don’t be fooled, these guys are the future but they are here now.
Our warriors have shown that there is pace and flair all over the pitch. When it clicks we look mighty impressive, with Matt Mullen as fast as a winger and Sam and Dale breaking attackers all over the park things can get rather exciting. On the other hand we have been known to give away the odd penalty. The old dogs of the Bristol pack will have done their homework so we must stay vigilant, because Regan Et Al will be in our faces all afternoon.
On the day it will be down to the team that plays as a team and the team that wants it most. Bristol need to close the gap and we need to widen it. We have been slow starters in the league for years and have not seen 8th for a few years now. But this is our traditional time to kick on and get some results in the back pocket. We members of Cecil Duckworth’s Barmy army can be the 16th man again. With 6,000 in the Slick Systems Stand and the increasing impressive support from both ends we can help the team over the try line. I see no reason why 4 or even 5 points are not possible on Saturday. However that Banana skin that is Bristol will be in town.
