It’s about to start, the Premiership season, and the Wusster fans are pretty much in 2 camps, the optimistic and the not so optimistic. It was ever thus. At the start of another league campaign it is worth reflecting on the fact that the Warriors are still hanging in there despite being in the bottom 3 for all of their Premiership seasons.
Not too bad a feat, but still not what was hoped for in the heady days following promotion.
If anyone can tell me the definitive reason as to why things haven’t moved on apart from not being able to recruit players and back room staff, I would be quite happy to listen. Mind you there as many theories as there are fans I think. The credit crunch has affected all clubs and Worcester is no exception. Funds for everything have become a bit less forthcoming and there have been positions both on and off the pitch that have gone unfilled, once vacated. It has been said that current and former players have too much influence on the coaching, but it may just be down to the relative low cost of their, as yet, unproven skills as coaches rather than weakness in leadership.
Many are hoping that the continuity of playing staff will see us through to another GP season next year and time will tell if that is to be the case, it would be ironic that the season Worcester get parity of funding is the season that they fail to stay in the GP. All the hard work to create a stadium to be proud of ending up in relegation, seems to be a cruel twist, but I am sure other clubs such as Quins and Saints have been similar positions the seasons they were relegated. I sincerely hope that this doesn’t happen as jobs will be lost and more financial cuts will need to be made.
Other clubs fans have reason to have misgivings about the outcome of the season as their squads have had wholesale changes made to them and you never know how things will come together come match day.
I have to say that I always go into a season hoping for the best, but pretty much knowing it will be a battle to stay up again. So I have bolstered myself for yelling even louder and more often, as that is what I do best, support the team, home or away I will try to as many games as I can and make my self heard. The boys need to know we are there for them, I fully intend to embrace being one of the “16th Man” brigade! A rose tinted realist to the last!
