A wet day in Llanelli
By Silver Warrior
November 16 2009

After a 3 hour drive in the rain and sunshine we finally arrived at Parc Y Scarlets. We managed to find the ticket office to purchase our terracing tickets. We then made our way round to the Training Barn which is a fabulous set up with hot pork and beef rolls available, ample seating and a large play area for the children including an area sectioned off so they can play rugby.

There is a bar available for over 18’s where they were showing the Bath v Ospreys game.

We left there and made our way to the terracing and were greeted by a few friendly men already in their spot. Before the game the teams formed a guard of honour as members of the Welsh guards walked out to a standing ovation to place the match ball on the spot. After seeing some of the lads in the bar afterwards it brought it home how young some of them are.

The game commenced and with mixed emotions we started to cheer the boys on. I thought like a lot of other people that we would get a beating but the youngsters fronted up and it was a very good learning curve.

Mat Cox made a couple of great breaks and the front row managed to hold their own for the majority of the game. Scarlets number 4 Lou Reed was a handful all game along with their number 6 Josh Turnbull who threatened to score on a number of occasions.

What I noticed about our game was that we weren’t taking the ball at speed we seemed to be taking it whilst stood still which obviously isn’t a good thing.

Rose in my eyes seemed to give us the benefit of the doubt on quite a few occasions much to the annoyance of the Scarlet’s fans on the terracing (never thought I’d be saying that about old Rosie). Even though it took him ages to eventually spot them pulling our lineout jumper down.

Here’s how I would score the individual performances.

15 Calum MacRae 7 - Missed one in the second half which led to a try. Covered fly half well.
14 Marcel Garvey 6 - Unfortunately Marcel didn’t see much of the ball.
13 Dale Rasmussen 6 - Was very rusty in the tackle area but seemed to do better in the second half.
12 Greg King 7 - Solid in defence along with Rico.
11 Rico Gear 8 - Put some really good tackles in and covered a lot of ground.
10 George Crook 7 - Kicked well considering the conditions
9 Ollie Frost 5 - Looked a bit like a rabbit caught in headlights. Will improve with more game time.
1 Adam Black 6 - solid in the scrum
2 Chris Fortey (c) 7 - Lineout seemed to operate a little better than it has done the past few weeks.
3 Jack Gilding 7 - Like Adam solid but held his own. Could do with some loan time to gain experience.
4 Graham Kitchener 7 - Excellent in the line out and managed to score a try. Interesting to see a replay of it. Got carded but from what I could see took it for the team to save a try.
5 Will Bowley 6 - Lineout work was good but didn’t offer a lot around the park
6 James Collins 6 - Solid work rate
7 Jake Abbott 7 - Solid at the breakdown
8 Matt Cox 9 - My man of the match. Made some great breaks and had a very good game.

Replacements

16 Callum Black 5 - Did well in the scrum when he came on.
17 Jordan Page Didn’t get any game time.
18 Olivier Sourgens 4 - Scrum was ok but didn’t offer anything else – looked very slow.
19 Craig Gillies 5 - Did well in the lineout and managed to put pressure on them.
20 Matt Kvesic 5 - Looked a promising young player
21 Jonny Arr 7 - Game looked more solid. Did some good kicks to touch
22 Mike Penn 5 - Same as Matt Kvesic.
23 Charlie Fellows Didn’t get any game time.

I hope the youngsters aren’t too downhearted with the performance as they showed a lot of spirit and did a lot better than a few had expected. Hope to see a few of them going out on loan to the lower division to get more game time and experience but from what I saw the academy are producing some very good young players.

All in all we had a very pleasant day out at Llanelli which was topped off with some gentlemen of the Scarlets choir singing in the bar afterwards. Hopefully this isn’t that last time we play Scarlet’s but next time I will stop over to enjoy the hospitality on offer.

Re: A wet day in Llanelli
Thoroughly enjoyed the day out, despite the weather. The welcome from the Scarlets fans was warm and friendly, particularly the couple in the South Stand bar who came over to me and my partner as we were waiting for friends and just started talking to us, as they must have thought we were a little lost.

It was great to see a team play some really good rugby and throw the ball around, even in poor conditions. Just a shame we couldn't have taken a leaf out of their book and joined in a little bit!

Whatever you do, do it safely!
