What Killed The Warriors? Review Of BBC Radio Show
By Zippy
June 16 2004
On Monday evening a BBC Radio Wales show investigated "What Killed The Celtic Warriors?" Read on for full details of the programme including some revealing insights.
The programme started with commentry from the famous win over Munster, when the decision to close the Warriors arrived it had only been 6 weeks since that win. They then spoke to Owen from .info he spoke about the strange beginnings of the Warriors, he then moved onto the electric atmosphere of the Munster game and the fact a supporter base for the region was really building. Then came David Moffett, the man is a really boring accountant, went on to say about how a team can't survive with an average of a 3,000 corwd blah blah blah. Boring man go home. They then looked at the formation of the Warriors and the problems Ponty were having financially caused by the strain of pro rugby. It meant LS bought them out and gave 50% to the union. Huge reliance on benefactors in the Welsh game. They then spoke to Lyn Howells who understandably was not a happy man, He said they got the win over Connacht and then days later were told the Warriors were closing down. They were not paid for the month of May and Howells spoke out about this and suggests he may need to sign on! He blamed Moffett, LS and the other regions for the close. No other regional side would speak to the program. They then visited a pub in Ponty, comments included: - We have been abandoned - It will not work if Cardiff came to Ponty - I will not attend any such game - You need a team that represents the community - Suggests everyone will flock to Ninian Park instead Then moves onto the topic of rugby league and speaks to Mark Rowley former Ponty great and coach of the Valley Cougars, he criticised the WRU again and suggested the closure of the Warriors has left a gap, which could be taken by Rugby League. The most interesting bit was an interview with Derick king from the Warriors board, he is one of the most respected men in Welsh rugby. He said that they were assured by a WRU representative that the Warriors would continue, there was a detailed plan that included a whole new board headed by David White of the Auckland Blues, games would be spread throughout the region including Llanharan and Maesteg with the rest 50/50 between the Brewery and Sardis. There were 6 witnesses in the room including independent accountants and solicitors and they are willing to go to court. They then approached Moffett about this who was particularly evasive, he then says that if fans want to watch pro rugby they will now go to the Blues or Ospreys, proves he still has absouloutely no understanding of the Welsh game. He then suggests we need to move on, keep wriggling Mr Moffett, you've made your death bed now lie in it. They also spoke to a money man in the area Chris Wilson who said he would have been willing to take over the Warriors but they went into liquidation rather than administration. It would have been via a consortium but he seemed to have the business mind to make a success of it. Sadly the Warriors academy has also been closed down, the academy housed as many players as the rest of the regions combined. Justin Burnell spoke and said he was gutted. Where do the players go? Well apparently Peter Thomas has given Moffett assurances that Cardiff will embrace the Valleys. I've never heard such a load of tosh in my life, well done Moffett in 6/7 years time when there is a lack of talent coming through you know whose door to knock on. Yes thats it the dole office, please go home and then someone could stand a chance of of rescuing this mess. An interesting show.
