Wales Face Fiji Showdown

Wales Face Fiji Showdown
By Andrew Collins September 29 2007
Wales face a stern test in an all or nothing Pool B match against Fiji. The winners will go on to face South Africa in the quarter final stages, while the losers go home in the third of today’s four matches in the 4pm kick off.

The big team news comes in the shape of Welsh fan favourite Gareth Thomas's return to the starting line up, earning him 100 International caps. He becomes the first Welshman to ever record such an achievement, and only the 8th in world rugby.

Thomas had previously thought he'd be out of the World Cup, and ending his career on 99, after injuring his collar bone against Australia. However, he recovered far quicker than previously thought, and will follow the likes of George Gregan, Jason Leonard and Stephen Larkham.

Alfie, as he's known to his team mates said,

"To get to the quarter-final on my 100th appearance would be fantastic for me - but more important to this young team. I've only got this far because I've never sought it as a personal ambition - it has always been about the team."

He starts at full back, replacing Kevin Morgan who was in poor form against Japan.

Elsewhere, Ian Evans gets a shock start, the talented Ospreys lock makes his first start in any competition since December! The only game time he has to his name is that of last week against, coming on as a replacement in the 72-18 win over Japan.

Tom Shanklin replaces Jamie Robinson in midfield, but he has a new partner at 12 in the shape of James Hook. Following the successful return of Stephen Jones, many people have called for the Jones; Hook and Shanklin combination, in order to get the best out of out of our pacey backs, only time till tell how that comes off.

Another interesting option, was the option of Dwaine Peel ahead of man of the match Mike Phillips. Peel has been off form all tournament, whereas Phillips shone in the Japanese victory. Plus, against the more aggressive and abrasive Fijians, Phillips, at well over 6 foot would seem the obvious option.

As for Fiji, their big guns return having been rested against the Australians. Captain Rauluni told BBC Sport;

 "It's our biggest game. We have to qualify [for the quarter-finals] and there is a lot of pressure on us from back home in Fiji."

The Fijians have called up winger Serali Bobo this week, having not originally been in the World Cup Squad. The South Sea Islanders believe that Bobo's pace could be key if coming on as a second half sub. He starts on the bench, but expect him to be involved.

But in truth, the Welsh are the bookies favorites, and it would be a big upset if Wales failed to make the last 8.
