Johnson’s Not Coming
With the excellent Rob Howley joining Warren Gatland and Shaun Edwards as full time coaching staff in the summer, the appointment of Johnson seemed like an excellent one, but Rob Nortser confirmed yesterday (Thursday 6th March) that he won't be returning to Wales as first thought,
"After much discussion, Scott has told us of his decision not to return to Wales at this point in his career, Scott's relationship with Wales and certainly our playing and coaching staff here at the Arms Park remains close despite his decision not to return at this time. We take the opportunity to thank Scott for his genuine interest in ongoing developments here at the Blues and wish him every success in the future."
It means the search for a new coach begins back at square one, and with former Wales fitness guru, Andrew Hore joining the Ospreys already this season, there are limited options of where to look. At the moment, there are no names being linked to the vacant role.
The search for a new coach has debatably slowed the transfer recruitment for next season, with just Ceri Sweeney set to arrive for next year, while Luke Evans and Darren Allinson are expected to be among the names promoted to more Blues appearances from the development course.
Tal Selley has impressed during his spell at the region, but with the impending return of Chris Czekaj, it's unlikely he'll be given a contract next year, with the Dragons favourites to secure the centre cum winger. If the move does go ahead, Tal will become the first player to ever play for all 4 regions.
As for departing players, it's thought Rhys Thomas has yet to agree a contract extension while Dai Flannagan could be released to make way for Sweeney's arrival.
However you look at it, both the playing and staff squads need improving, and it looks as though very little is being done to secure the top names for forthcoming years.
