Nicky Fit for Toulouse

Nicky Fit for Toulouse
By Andrew Collins March 17 2008
Cardiff Blues physio, Tim Atter, believes fly half Nicky Robinson WILL be deemed fit in time for the Heineken Cup Quarter Finals against Toulouse, if not a week or two before. There’s also good news regarding Stitch and Dai Flanagan.

Tim Atter wrote in his ‘Physio Room' column on www.Cardiff Blues.com;

"Nicky Robinson is doing very well in rehab. He's been guided by the consultants but has a chance of being considered for the Heineken Cup quarters if not a week or two earlier."

There'll be another big boost to the squad this Friday, as Marc Stcherbina and Dai Flannagan redeem match fitness in time for the trip to the Scarlets.

"Dai Flanagan is out of plaster and has just started contact training and hopefully will be available for the Scarlets away match. Marc Stcherbina is back in contact rugby specific training and we're aiming to get him back for the Scarlets away match."

Rob Sidoli could also join Nicky, Stitch and Dai in their successful fitness race, Atter stating the Grand Slam winner of 05 was "hopeful to be back for the Heineken Cup quarter or sometime in April 08"

Unfortunately, centenary player Rhys Williams, winger Chris Czekaj and locks Bradley Davies and James Goode will miss the remainder of the season.

But the big news will be the return of Robinson at 10, who has been out of action since the away loss to Stade Francais on the 9th December. He first suffered the injury on the 3rd November as the Blues lost at Leicester Tigers, but made an unsuccessful recovery against Stade and has been out ever since.

This article was put on a couple of weeks ago - I keep asking them to update the Physio Room page more frequently.

I was wondering if there was any further news - was the assessment in the article correct.

I still think he'll need game time before Toulouse.

I really believe picking Nickie against Toulouse as his first game back would be a mistake. There is a difference between being fit and being match fit. Remember the Stade away game. We need to give him game time at Edinburgh if possible.

Understandable, but would you put him on the bench againt Toulouse, or put Rhys Jones or Dai Flanagan?

If Nicky isn't match fit - do you think Macleod will start?

Or will Flanagan get a chance next weekend?

Personally after the way he performed against Stade in Cardiff if Nicky isn't fit I'd start with Dai Flanagan and put either Nicky or Macloed on the bench Flanagan may be fit to face the Scarlets on Friday so that means he could have 2 games and therefore plenty of time to show that he is match fit. The kicking duties have to be in Ben Blairs hands if Flanagan plays

Nicky definatly needs at least a half in Edinburgh to prove he is fit enough for the challenge in France. The last thing we need is a repeat of the away game in Paris with Nicky breaking down again we are going to need him for the Semi Final against London Irish.

Just out of curiostiy but if Ceris(lol) Sweeney signs who moves on Nicky, Mcleod or Flanaghan?

Regarding Toulouse you definetly want Robinson on the pitch you can alternate kicking duties with Blair then- i dont think it fair to play Flanaghan when Blair is surely going to take all kick as it hampers his progression!

Why would Nicky move on? If we're forced to play Flanagan, I'd expect Blair to kick.

I don't think any of the above will be dropped, i think Macelod won't be considered an outside half cover any more. He's not really a great 10, but i really like him at 15 and 12.

Although if anyone must go, its Flanagan for me.

Let's let CS go at least DF may have a future.

NR needs at least 40 mins against Edinburgh.

Agreed about Macleod, more of a 12 or 15, he's a very good runner and distribution is usually pretty tidy. Just his kicking lets him down.

If I had to pick one of them to go - Flanagan.

But think we should keep them all for next season.

There's a few supporters saying bye bye to flanagan. people have short memories. flanagan considerably improved his game against the likes of bath, toulouse etc before his unfortunate injury. he deserves to stay.
can u honestly see macleod and the like having a future at the club at number 10 (I inc NR in the equation by the way, bit of an enigma in my eyes and if he was up to it he would've won far more welsh caps ).
any opinions on the number 9 shirt ? allinson cannot be a bad a number 9 as rees surely ??????

Are you suggesting ditching Nicky Robinson, whilst keeping Flanagan?

I would dearly like to see NR stay and even fight for the number 10 welsh shirt, i really would. when he's good, he's top notch, however IMO he's just far too inconsistant for my liking and has yet to prove to be a week in week out performer. certainly not won as many caps as maybe he should have. i see NR and DF as the number 10's for next season on the basis that there's not going to be a world class number 10 available for tranfer end of season. here's hoping though. god, i 4got about sweeney (Sm58)

Nicky's inconsistency has been much less of a problem for a while now (referring to before this lengthy injury spell, of course) I think. He is by a good distance the best outside half at Cardiff, in both teams.

Wasn't having a go by the way, just wanted clarification.

I UNDERSTAND ROCKY. NR HAS A GOOD PERSONALITY TOO. B NICE TO SEE HIM BACK FOR THE TOULOUSE GAME ALTHOUGH AS YOU HAVE PROBABLY GUESSED I'M NOT HIS BIGGEST FAN. BEST WE'VE GOT AT THE MOMENT THOUGH BY QUITE A WAY.
PLEASE NO SWEENEY THOUGH......

And by God don't we need him back fit for the Toulouse game.

Nicky is simply the best 10 we have

I really don't understand the anti Nicky Robinson comments. Not only is the guy the best in cardiff, i think he's one of teh best fly halfs in Britain. This 'inconsistant' tag that he has is completely unjustified, yes when he was young he was inconsisatnt, understandbale, but he's grown with age. I can't remember him having a bad game.

As far as inconsistancy goes, he's either supurb, or safe, and more often than not, he's supurb.

We need him for Toulouse, without a it NR, we have next to no hope.

In Britain Admin, are you Mrs Robinson?

Well it perhaps depends on what type of fly half you want, but there are few as creative as Nicky. Obviously if want a boring kick to the corner style, then your looking at Andy Goode, O'Gara, Wilko etc. but there are few players in the mould of Nicky and Hook, and certainly few better than Robinson.

I dont think we can risk NR for Toulouse, unless he gets a full 80 mins at Edinburgh. If he thinks he's ready he has to start that match. Last time he came back from this injury it went again in the 1st match, if that happened in Toulouse it would be a killer blow.
No one really knows if he's fit or not. Wait for the Edinburgh team to be announced.
As for DF i think he's got great potential, he steadied the ship before he got injured, thought he was playing really well.
Would much rather see him playing than useless McCloud.

In fairness, Nikcy has had surgery this time, so the likelihood of suffering the same injury is very unlikley, the real problem would come in the fact he has had very little game time and would be rusty.

We can't risk Nicky in Toulouse? We can't risk not having him in Toulouse as long as he's fit enough to run.

At the end of teh day, if he does get injured during the match, and is out for teh remainder of teh season, it would still be a risk worth taking.

Spot on. There's nothing else to worry about after Toulouse, we can take the risk.
