Sam Norton-Knight Offered Contract

Sam Norton-Knight

Australian Waratah’s back, Sam Norton-Knight, has been offered a three year deal to sign with the Cardiff Blues. The 25 year old full back is expected to sign before Friday, and is thought to be a replacement for the outgoing Nick Robinson.

The two-times capped Norton-Knight spoke out about his impending move today, telling RugbyHeaven.com,

"It looks like I am going. I am looking at a draft contract. Nothing has been signed yet, but we will line something up. I am enjoying it at the Waratahs but I am at a time of my life where I have to look at what I am doing. This is an opportunity to get a bit closer to the footy, the ruck, a bit closer to the game."

Norton-Knight has 48 Super Rugby appearances, having played full back, centre, wing, and a handful in his favoured position, outside half and he's revealed his desire to play more at 10 is the main reason for the move.

"I will get a chance to play 10. If I chose to move, that's definitely a part of why I am. I enjoy playing fullback [at NSW]. I am not bitter about that or anything, but I would still like to give myself a bit of a test at 10. So that is really what the move is about."

Cardiff chiefs have drawn up a three-year draft contract, which he has verbally agreed to sign before Friday's match with the Highlanders. It's thought the link between the Blues and the Australian is through Young's assistant, Billy Millard, who worked with Norton-Knight at 7's and ‘A' levels.

That throws more doubt on the future of current fly half Nicky Robinson, who has been linked with Sale as well as other English clubs.

The Blues are already reeling this week following the loss of Nicky's brother Jamie, who has signed for Toulon in France. The centre is celebrating his testimonial season at the Arms Park, but at 28 has decided it's time to move on.

Should the pair both leave, it would be a huge blow to Dai Young and the Blues fans who have seen the brothers grow into Welsh Internationals during their time at Cardiff. Young, who has himself been linked away from his current role said earlier this week,

"It goes without saying that you always want to keep your better players and he [Jamie] is certainly one of our better players. The club may want to keep them, but it's up to the players as well to decide on where they feel their future lies best. They [French clubs] are certainly flooding the market with a lot of money and it turns a lot of players' heads, really."

On his own future, Young told BBC Sport,

"I can categorically say that my future is here and I've got no interest in moving from the Blues. I don't want to keep answering questions on this. I'm 100 per cent committed to our chairman [Peter Thomas] here and working with our chairman to give the success this region probably deserves and which the fans deserve."

He also confirmed that there will be a statement from the region in the next week, which is expected to confirm the loss of Jamie and Nicky Robinson, but could confirm the arrivals of Norton-Knight and scrum half Gareth Cooper.

Young was speaking after the Blues 34-30 win over Glasgow on Friday night.
