Sale Pull Out of Robinson Bid

Sale Pull Out of Robinson
By Andrew Collins
March 7 2009
Sale have dramatically pulled out of the race to sign Nick Robinson, despite seemingly being favourites to land the 27 year old fly half. There are still offers from Gloucester and Worcester to consider, while it’s thought France would be his favoured destination.

Kingsley Jones' Sale have withdrawn their bid to sign Cardiff's long-standing fly half, Nick Robinson. The news comes as a boost to Blues board and fans, who now have one less club to compete with to try and keep him in Wales. It's not known why Sale's interest has diminished, but it may go a long way towards him signing a new deal with the Arms Park region.

Sale offered Robinson perhaps the most dramatic scenery change after 8 years in the Welsh capital, and now with only Gloucester, who already have Carlos Spencer, Ryan Lamb and Ollie Barkley at 10, and Worcester, who are being propped off the bottom of the Guinness Premiership by Bristol, showing interest, Dai Young may at last be able to convince him to stay put.

"He feels he has been here eight or nine years and he wants to get it right in his mind to either stay here for another two or three years or experience another environment. With only experiencing one environment, he has got it in his mind that he might want to look at other environments. We don't want him to go but Nicky has really to make his own mind up."

Young also revealed that the Blues have been doing everything they can to keep hold of the Welsh International, despite the impending arrival of Sam Norton-Knight in the summer.

"We have been negotiating with Nicky since October. There is nothing more we can do but the refreshing thing with Nicky is that it is not about money. He certainly hasn't been tempted by money. He wants to look at possible challenges away from the Arms Park or whether he is happy to spend the rest of his career here."

Although the news today of Sale losing interest is great for the Blues, it's believed an offer to play in France would be too much to turn down. Brother Jamie has recently signed a 2-year deal with Toulon, and it's thought Nicky has always been keen to one day play in France.

But for now at least, it appears as though there has been no offer to play across the channel, and so the Blues will again spend the next few days trying to convince another star player that their future lies at the Cardiff Blues.

Truth is Nicky Robinson would be a back up 10 to anyone bar Bristol and Worcester in the Premiership, if i were Nicky Robinson i would be looking at maybe leaving for Italy, or another Magners Team or maybe even a mid to bottom table french side???
N.Robinson is talented but far to inconsistant in my eyes.
Sale were billed as a team to really push for the title this season with the signings they made - some of which have been poor - Nicky Robinson would not compete with Hodgson especially on todays loss with newcastle where Peel was naff and Hodgson was one of the better sparks.
If a team like Northampton cam knocking i however think he could push for the jersey there.
our problem now is that we're overloaded with potential 10's in Nicky, Sweeny, Norton Knight and Flanghan so we need to off load at least one even two.

We we certainly need to offload Sweeny and Flannagan, i'm not so sure i agree with your pessamism reguarding Nicky mind you.

I dont think Sweeny has had a fair bite at the cherry - so to speak, he's a decent back up to have. I dont mean to be so negative about Nicky but to many times have i seen him put in a great cross field touch finder only to be coupled with a terrible miss hit at a conversion. For me if we are to go anywhere we need to bring in a consistant fly half, Ben Blair has been great at conversions but when teams like Munster- O'Gara, Ospreys- Hook, Scarlets- Jones and Leinster Contepomi boast fly halfs with that presence at kicking power you realise that Nicky is not on par with them. If we had some cash and some drive and if he wasnt so injury prone Henson at 10 would be great a really coup, but he's settled at 12. I just dont see anyone looking to take a shot at Nicky Robinson.

If Nicky stays with SNK signing i'd be happy to have Sweeney as 3rd choice behind those two. I haven't seen SNK play yet, let alone at 10, but looking at DY's history of buying SH players straight from S14 (Xav, Blair, Tito), I have faith he'll come good.

It was highly unlikely that Nicky would have joined Sale anyway as he would of at best been 2nd choice Fly Half behind Charlie Hodgson. I also think now we have signed SNK that it is unlikely that he will stay and be 2nd choice with us. It is probable he will end up at Worcester if he goes to England
