Warburton to Make First Blues Start

Sam Warburton
By Andrew Collins
April 1 2009
Former Wales Under 20’s captain Sam Warburton will make his first competitive appearance for the Cardiff Blues in Friday night’s visit to Edinburgh. Meanwhile, there are several other changes as players are rested before Toulouse next weekend.

Minor injuries rule out Gareth Thomas (hamstring), Tom James (calf), Martyn Williams (toe), Andy Powell (thigh), Jason Spice and Maama Molitika (dead leg), though all should be available for next weekends Heineken Cup Quarter Final against Toulouse.

Dai Young has also chosen to rest Xavier Rush, Tom Shanklin and Gethin Jenkins to ensure the fitness of his top players with a busy month ahead.

The Magner's League has become largely insignificant to the Blues, who still have the chance of winning two trophies in their final season at Cardiff Arms Park, but in order to qualify for European rugby next season, they must finish ahead of one other Welsh side to ensure they won't face an Italian play off without their Lion's players.

In the backs, Ritchie Rees gets a rare start next to Nicky Robinson, with Jamie Roberts and Jamie Robinson in midfield.

Leigh Halfpenny, who was outstanding in the EDF Semi win over Northampton, continues on the wing, with Chris Czekaj continuing his road to recovery having spent most of the season with Cardiff RFC. Ben Blair stays at full back.

Up front, John Yapp, Rhys Thomas and Gary Powell come in for Gethin Jenkins, Gareth Williams and Tao' Felise.

Bradley Davies has a chance to force his way into contention for Toulouse, partnering Tito at lock. Davies has been highly impressive in recent weeks, scoring the winning try over Gloucester at Kingsholm, making his Wales debut in the 6 Nations and making a big impact in the line out against Northampton.

Ben White replaces Molitika, who has made more appearances for Cardiff than any other player this season, Robin Sowden-Taylor continues at 7, with Warburton starting at Number 8, the position he played for Wales U20's rather than his preferred role of flanker.

Felise and Williams cover the front row on the bench, with Deiniol Jones and Scott Morgan completing a strong set of forwards reserves. Darren Allinson, Ceri Sweeney and Richard Mustoe are all likely to feature with Toulouse a week away, not forgetting the EDF Final with Glos just a week after that.

Ben Blair; Chris Czekaj; Jamie Robinson, Jamie Roberts; Leigh Halfpenny; Nicky Robinson, Richie Rees; John Yapp, T Rhys Thomas, Gary Powell, Bradley Davies, Paul Tito (capt), Ben White, Robin Sowden Taylor, Sam Warburton

Taufa'ao Filise, Gareth Williams, Deiniol Jones, Scott Morgan, Darren Allinson, Ceri Sweeney, Richard Mustoe
