6 Blues Confirmed As Lions

Lion Lee Halfpenny
By Andrew Collins
April 21 2009
Lion's coach Ian McGeechan has announced six Cardiff Blues players in his touring party to South Africa. That's a joint record for any Cardiff side, with Cardiff RFC supplying 6 Lions in 1968.

Six Cardiff Blues players have been selected for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa.

Leigh Halfpenny, Tom Shanklin and Jamie Roberts are all selected in the backs, while Andy Powell, Martyn Williams and Gethin Jenkins are chosen in the forwards.

That's twice as many Blues players than last tour in 2005, when just Shankin, Williams and Jenkins went. It will be Halfpenny, Roberts and Powell's first Lions tours.

Cardiff make up 6 of the 13 Welsh players going on tour with the Ospreys also having 6 (5 Welsh and Tommy Bowe of Ireland), but Munster equal Newport and Leicetser's immense record of 8 included.

It's a record number of Cardiff Lions, equalling the 1968 tour, also to South Africa, when Gerald Davies, Gareth Edwards, Barry John, Keri Jones, John O’Shea and Maurice Richards were all included.

However there are a number of suprises, for example there's no place in the tour for Wales captain Ryan Jones, England captian Steve Borthwick and Scotland's Mike Blair, while several other big names also miss out.

Ryan Jones has played his way out of a lions jersey ever since he was touted as being the likely captain!!!!

Well done to the 14 Welsh based players going including the 6 from the Blues (Sm128)

Blues fan lost in Limerick!

Does anyone know if this is the record for the number of Cardiff players to make a Lions squad.

Congratulations to all concerned and good luck in SA.

Congrats to all the lads. Fantastic news for us Blue's fans to be proud of.

Tipped Jamie after his performance in the Kingsholm game. I think he may even start in the 1st test.

Really feel a bit gutted for Gareth Williams. Had a sneaky feeling he may have got the swerve ball decision....and to lose out to Matthew Rees out of anyone????? (Sm122)

Great news for the Blues! I must admit to feeling a bit of a lump in my throat when the names were read out and our boys were all in there. I do feel sorry for Gareth Williams as he has been the best hooker in Wales for the last 2 years, but clearly Gatland has something against him. He is the equal of Mears and Flannery and head and shoulders above Rees.

Great news to have 6 Blues in the Lions squad but I'm sure that Richard Cockerill will use that to motivate The Tigers next weeks being as Harry Ellis is their only Lion. Must admit I was very surprised not to see Tom Croft in the squad.

Hook has been playing bad the last couple of weeks I would fancy Nicky going on a Lions tour or maybe a trip with Wales will be good for him
