End Of Season Report - 2006/07
By Zippy May 20 2007
So another season is over, myself and contributers from the message board of the state of play will comment on how the season has gone for Wales, Ospreys, Cardiff, Dragons, Scarlets and the Premier League. As usual it wasn't a quiet season in Welsh Rugby!! For details read on.

Wales:

Autumn Internationals - These were very forgettable for Wales all in all, after inconclusive wins against the Islanders and Canada we were hammered by the All Blacks and "Haka-gate". The high point was the other game and not the fact we drew 29 all with Australia but the emergence of James Hook.

6 nations - "As long as we beat the English we don't care" seems to be the attitude from the press, well granted that was an impressive win but it was the worst England side I've seen in my lifetime. We lost to Ireland with an understrength side and fought well in France. But against Scotland and Italy we were terrible, and what about the final whistle in Italy!!

Ospreys:

Magners League - Champions

EDF Cup - Runners Up

Heineken Cup - Group Stage

After the money the Ospreys spent they were expected to challenge on all fronts and they did, in the Heineken Cup they were unlucky but the performance away at Stade cost them. In the EDF they lost it the first half and they just managed to win the Celtic League.

Lyn Jones will need more if he is to keep his job with the Dream Team.

Cardiff:

Magners League - Runners Up

EDF Cup - Semi's

Heineken Cup - Group Stage

Dai Young doesn't have a lot of money but appears to have spent shrewdly with the Kiwis. They weren't expected to do a lot this season and for most of it didn't once again failing badly in Europe. But in the 2nd half they sprung to life, and put in some good performances to be runners up in the Celtic League.

Next season they'll need the board to invest or they'll go backwards.

Dragons: (Write up by Issac Dix)

Magners League - 9th

EDF Cup - Group Stage

Challenge Cup - Semi's

Seemed to do well in most of the matches that they played in but it didn't reflect that in their league position. . The Dragons always put up a good fight with the limited squad that they have. They have now qualified for the Heineken Cup for next season. They will struggle unless they find some money to strengthen their squad. Paul Turner is working miracles at that club with the resources he has but atleast he is turning to local resources. (Gareth Maule, Phil Dolman etc)

Llanelli:

Magners League - 4th

EDF Cup - Group Stage

Heineken Cup - Semi's

Phil Davies made an impact with the Turks, didn't have a great deal of money to play with after Stephen Jones was brought home. The Scarlets season was all about Europe and they played some great rugby to get to the semi's and then didn't turn up for the semi's. Next season they'll be looking to bulk up the pack and Broster may well be the replacement for the retiring John Davies.

Welsh Prem:

Winners - Neath

Another title for Neath after a difficult season for them, the league was headed by Ebbw Vale at one stage but it was a disappointing season for the league that saw some very bad rugby. Hopefully Roger Lewis gets some investment into the league.

Welsh Cup:

Winners - Llandovery

Fairytale win for the small village and they won't forget this win, well done to Llan.

The State of Play Awards (Serious Proper Ones 4 once!)

Welsh Player of the year - Shane Williams

Overseas Player of the year - Regan King

Over 30's Player of the year - Colin Charvis

Coach of the year - Rowland Phillips (How many titles in a row?)
