Zippy's Player Ratings - Wales vs France
By Zippy August 28 2007
Player ratings for Wales 34 - 7 defeat to France at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday in the last of the warm up games before the world cup. It was Wales worst home defeat to France since the year 2000, they did go one better than England by managing a try. For details read on.

15. K Morgan (4) - Please don't be injured! Bizarely not used in attack again.

14. M Jones (6) - Far more involved than in recent games but still not given enough good ball out wide.

13. J Robinson (4) - Didn't let us down but didn't provide the cutting edge that was hoped for.

12. G Thomas (5) - Played like a warrior but for all his grunt just went to show that we need creativity at 12.

11. S Williams (5) - Always exciting to see him on the ball but clearly needed the game to get sharp.

10. J Hook (5) - Scored another great try but kicking and presence was lacking.

9. D Peel (3) - Kick charged down and was completely put out of the game by the French back row.

8. A Popham (6) - Lots of effort again, but we're just crying out for Ryan Jones to make us those extra 5 yards over the gainline.

7. M Williams (7) - Wales MOTM, everywhere and we need him firing in the world cup like this.

6. J Thomas (6) - Marked so highly because the line out went well, apart from that needs to up attack rate.

5. AW Jones (4) - Compared to last week a little lacklustre, might be feeling the impact of 3 internationals in a short space of time.

4. I Gough (5) - Put himself about and the only one of the front v not to be completely outmuscled.

3. C Horsman (2) - Took a screwing and the usual indiscipline.

2. M Rees (6) - Gets credit for the line out but where was his trademark runs?

1. D Jones (3) - Scrum all over the shop.

Subs of note:

Gethin Jenkins came on like a man possessed after his tragic news, RIP to his mum.

France Stars:

Chabal is now a world star, great to see characters like him in the game.

Overall Comments:

Completely outplayed and battered, unlike in the previous games the lineout worked and we saw plenty of the ball.

The worry was we didn't do a thing with it and the impressive French defence read us, my only hope is that we weren'r showing any of our cards and are keeping them for the world cup, I'm probably clasping at straws.

If we play like that against any of the sides with monster packs i.e. France, England or South Africa then we'll get the same battering as we don't have the players to take sides on with those tactics.

Sort it out Gyppo, some creativity for heavens sake.

I have been really impressed with Melon. He seems to be getting close to his 2005 best. He did well against France and Argentina when he came off the bench.

He has been good, can't think why he hasn't been given a start mind?

Zippy, again fair assessments. If I were going to disagree with any one score it would be M.Williams (7). He is always good value, or better - I would squeeze him up to 8, or more.
