Zippy's Player Ratings - Wales vs Canada
By Zippy September 11 2007
Player ratings for Wales opening Rugby World Cup match, a 42 - 17 win over a brave Canada. Wales took to the field in some awful Grey jerseys that make the green of old look like a trendsetter. Also RiP to Sir Tasker Watkins, a great man and our wishes go to his family.

15. K Morgan (4) - Not at the races, praised by the commentary team for his positional work, I didn't see any evidence of it.

14. M Jones (4) - Wasn't involved really was he? Would be nice to see him pop up like Shane does looking for work and giving the pack a break.

13. T Shanklin (6) - Ineffective until Stephen Jones came on and then ran riot, if that tells you something.

12. S Parker (3) - Didn't take any of the burden off Hook who was playing his first world cup game, picked up a try and will prob keep his place, I don't think he should.

11. S Williams (6) - Gets tries and is dangerous, few errors but coming back to form and is a match winner.

10. J Hook (2) - Let the occassion of the first world cup game get to him and showed no control whatsoever, gave away a try when it was easier to score and place under major question.

9. D Peel (5) - Not helped by his pack but did ok.

8. A Popham (4) - In the first half Wales needed him to stand tall to the physical Canadians, he didn't come up to the challenge.

7. M Williams (3) - Probably his worst game for Wales, very very quiet.

6. J Thomas (5) - Again marked so highly because the line out went very well and he seems to be the common factor, needs to get stuck in more.

5. AW Jones (6) - Committed effort and rewarded with a nice try.

4. I Gough (7) - Big hits and how he got to Morgan Williams I'll never know.

3. A Jones (6) - The scrum wasn't under pressure and here is the reason.

2. M Rees (5) - Lineout went well, needs to up his workrate to help out the backrow, would have hoped to finish the try before the intercetion but I'll forgive him that.

1. G Jenkins (5) - Scrum went well but workrate not good enough, plain and simple, continues to be under threat from Duncan.

Subs of note:

Stephen Jones - Wales MOTM despite only playing for 20mins, enthusiam and control showed what a 10 must do as bread and butter.

Alfie - Ran strongly, tackled strongly, such an influence when his country needs him.

Charvis - Cleaned up the Welsh ball and a talisman if used correctly.

Canada Stars:

Morgan Williams - bit of class about him and was on fire and a constant thorn in the Welsh side.

Thiel/Snow - 2 old warhorses giving it everything for Canada, great stuff.

Overall Comments:

Phew, we got a bonus point win.

I have to start by congratulating the Canadians who for 60mins had us beat and did there country proud, if they play like that they may well surprise the Aussies as well.

Now for Wales who were completely shambolic, we didn't come out for a world cup game and were outfought by an inferior team. The coach will come under scrutiny, I suspect as in the last world cup when the subs came on they changed the gameplan and I'm not convinced this was Gyppo's doing.

We cannot concede tries so easily, if we defend like that we'll have to score 50points to beat Australia because we'll have let in 40.

But I'll finish on a positive, when Wales do play well they have something that other sides don't........cutting edge, it got us out of a hole on Sunday and we'll need it again on Saturday.
