15. K Morgan (4) - Bit of a disaster of an evening with the boot and in defence, finished a try off but would not be playing if Alfie was fit, as it stands needs a mighty kick up the backside.
14. D James (6) - The backline version of Ian Gough, so much experience that he'll never let you down and knows the way to the tryline. Never going to be spectacular but a safe selection.
13. J Robinson (5) - Doesn't suit him having a creative 12 inside him because he is then expected to do the carrying which is not his game, was solid enough.
12. J Hook (5) - Moments of brilliance combined with what the hell was he doing, at least from 12 that doesn't impact the whole side and looks likely he'll continue to line up here.
11. S Williams (7) - I think harshly criticised for a few mistakes, he tries things and when they come off its what no other winger in the UK can do at present. Did cringe at his hack kick which went dead!!
10. S Jones (7) - Lead well.
9. M Phillips (7) - Shaky first half from purely trying too hard, fantastic 2nd and no idea why he was taken off, huge debate over he or Peel.
8. A Popham (6) - Looked for the offload a little too much which caused errors, its not his game and he should just get his head down and barge.
7. M Williams (8) - Best game in a while and back to his sniping and linking best, now needs to do it against the big boys. MOTM
6. C Charvis (7) - Really made an impact at the breakdown to secure ball in a avery loose game, key man and might be rested next week IMO.
5. AW Jones (8) - The big man is gaining more and more fans with every game, a line out present and carries strongly in the loose, potential world class.
4. W James (5) - A steady club player who didn't let himself down, why Ian Evans didn't play from the start I'll never know.
3. C Horsman (5) - Workload round the park not great but asserted himself at the scrum and didn't give away too many penalties.
2. R Thomas (7) - He'll be happy he has at last put pressure on Mathew Rees with a physical display and good lineout throwing.
1. D Jones (7) - Works and works, some of the tackles he makes for a prop forward are excellant.
Subs of note:
Cooper and Owen both looked sharp, Owen in particular should have had more game time.
Japan Stars:
They didn't really have much ball but there whole approach to the game is refreshing and they scored the try of the tournament.
Overall Comments:
Decent win first of all, but something someone said to me rung true.
"How do we score so many points given that we're never really in control of the game."
We need to have a first half game plan that is far tighter and doesn't lead us to sides being with us at any point of the game. We can then play wide in the 2nd.
