Are You Supporting England On Saturday?
By Zippy October 16 2007
Its the big one this Saturday 8o'clock at the Stade de France in Paris, the final of the 2007 rugby world cup. Wales arch rivals England take on South Africa for rugby's top prize - the Webb Ellis trophy. Bred In Heaven asks who will you be supporting?

Obviously if you are an English reader of the site ignore the question.

But for the Welsh is it an easy black and white scenario?

The English are just over the bridge, if they were to win the Welsh would get a great knock on effect in interest in the game through the Heineken and anglo-Welsh cup and revenue would be bolstered despite going out of the world cup in such humiliating circumstances.

But if they do win we're going to have to put up with 4 more years of replays of very average rugby games, the next Lions tour will be ruined again by having Dads army playing captained by an 87year old Lawrence Dayglo and Sir-Lord (New title as he's so great) Jonny Wilkinson kicking drop goals from the changing room with his wrong foot after he has been reconstructed for the 8th time. Then the London meedja and EBC(BBC) will spend 99.9% of there coverage time in 6nations talking about how the "World Champions" magnificient forwards will dominate the pathetic Celts and wind up the Gaules.

Anyway will you be cheering on the men in White come 8o'clock?

I will, but if there is an open top bus and everyone becomes knighted and Gareth Edwards doesn't I won't be happy.

Enjoy the game.

You gave possitives and negatives for supporting England. Most of which I agree with .... Yes there would be four more years of how England won ....etc and there is no denying that.
But after the slating the Six nations was given by the southern boys as regards How to play rugby it would be a slap in the face to them from All Northern Hem sides. Let's face it. The rugby world cup has really always been about North V's South.

English interloper here ... please don't blame us all for the wrongs of the meejah, the BBC and the honours system. We probably hate them just as much as you do. They are all crap.

Another Sais here. I echo Two Sheds' sentiments. Also, the party didn't last that long, did it? You have had close on 3 years gloating watching our demise. The recent revival has stunned us all and if by some miracle we retain the Cup I can't see there being a repeat of the previous celebrations - but you never know.

The honours list says more about Tony Blair (last time out - and the Ashes) than it does about the sport. Tony Blair (and I presume Gordon Brown will do the same given the opportunity) by 'awarding' those honours achieves success by association.

Honours should only be given at the end of a career, if they are to be given at all. Someone of Gareth Edwards' vintage is probably about right. Do we know for sure he has not turned one down?

For me the most outstanding example, by a mile,of someone not getting full recognition (i.e. knighthood) is Bob Paisley. To me he was all a professional sportsperson should be. He did get an OBE. (Gareth Edwards has a CBE.) I think Bob Paisley's achievements are second to none in football and sport in general. I met him once. A wonderful, modest man. I am, by the way, an Evertonian.

My other nominees for sportsmen who deserved more recognition are Tommy Vile (rugby) and Eddie Paynter (cricket). Posthumous their awards would have to be, but deserved none the less.

Surprised but pleased that none of my countrymen have come on this thread to see they'd rather die than see England win on Saturday, attitudes are gradually changing and more than one game now matters to the majority of Welsh fans every year.

I'll still be amazed if I see anyone brave enough to wear an England top in my local on Sat eve.

I sort of want England to win because they were written off before the WC and they are underdogs. It'll also be a good thing for NH rugby and the 6N's. I like most of the England fans I have met and have lots of English Rugby mates. The downside is if they win then, as Zippy said, the media coverage will be endless and OTT.
If SA win then I hope they win playing open attacking rugby as it's the sort of Rugby I prefer. This will also please me.
Anyway I'll be watching the game in Tresaith , West Wales as I am off up there for a weekend break. I doubt there will be many England supporters there.(Sm151)

Surely the Welsh were most famous for wearing this uniform?

Only two of the eleven were born in Wales (If Monmouth was counted as Wales' in 1879). Bromhead was born in France, Chard in Plymouth, Hook was a Gloucester man, Allen was born in Berwick-on -Tweed, Hitch was a Londoner, William Jones, Bristol, Robert Jones, Raglanand Fielding in Abergavenny. Dalton (London), Reynolds (Dublin) and Schiess (Switzerland) would not have worn the red tunics.

As regards the regiment in 1879 it was the 2nd Warwickshires; they didn't change their title to the South Wales Borderers until 1st July 1881.

So no, not Welsh. Don't believe all you see on the silver screen.

gogs'r'us, You are right it was who served in the regiments that counts. I feel sure you will know that the Welsh only made up about 15% of this regiment.
