Improvement from Williams in Friday Practice

Nico in eighth
By Andrew Hooper
October 31 2008
With AT&T Williams drivers finishing in eighth and tenth, with Nico leading Kazuki, it would be an improvement for the Williams team after the earlier practice session. Both Nico and Kazuki would set their times early in the sesssion using the softer tyre. An improvement from the Williams drivers but is it enough to enable them to perform well come qualifying and the race? Fastest was Alonso.

 Brazilian GP Friday 2nd Practice

The second Friday practice for the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix would see both Kazuki Nakajima and Nico Rosberg take to the track, along with about half the field. First driver to set a time was Vettel with a 1m:14.999 followed by team-mate Bourdais with a 1m:15.511. But several drivers would move ahead of the Torro Rosso drivers with Kubica fastest, 1m:14.258, followed by Trulli and Piquet. But Alonso would move to the top of the times with a 1m:13.806, while Vettel improved to be second. But just as quickly Trulli was now fastest with a 1m:13.478 followed by Kubica. Webber was now second as several other drivers took to the track. Trulli would pit while Kovalainen went second fastest, 1m:13.627. But Webber would improve with a 1m:13.617 to move ahead of the McLaren. Nico and Kazuki were down in fourteenth and fifteenth. Both their times wee over one second off the pace.

RosbergNeither Ferrari or Hamilton had yet to come out. Glock was now fastest with a 1m:13.201. Both Nico and Kazuki had pitted. Massa was now out on the track. Glock would pit while Kovalainen would improve to be second with a time of 1m:13.397. Webber would also improve with a 1m:13.214 to move up to second. Massa was now third, 1m:13.322, but his next lap would see him fastest with a 1m:13.077. Both Hamilton and Raikkonen were out on the track. Trulli was able to move ahead of Massa with a 1m:12.999. With just under fifteen minutes of the session run the order was Trulli from Massa, Glock, Webber, Kovalainen, Vettel, Heidfeld, Raikkonen, Coulthard, and Kubica. Nico would return to the track. Hamilton was able to move into fifth, 1m:13.284.

Massa had improved, 1m:13.006, but remained in second. Raikkonen would move ahead of Hamilton and into fifth, 1m:13.256. Kazuki was back out, joining Nico. Glock would also show pace from the Toyota moving into third, 1m:13.201. But in a bit of a surprise Nico would move to the top of the times with a 1m:12.879. Massa was now second with a 1m:12.923. Nico's time was set on the softer tyre. Raikkonen was now fourth followed by Glock. Hamilton was down in seventh, 1m:13.284. Kazuki was now eighth, 1m:13.328. tenth placed Alonso was also on the softer tyre. The main championship rivals were all on the harder tyre. Massa would pit as Bourdais moved into eighth, 1m:13.318. Trulli's time was also set on the softer tyre. Coulthard was now third, 1m:12.896, also on the softer tyre. Bourdais would run wide at the Senna S but was able to continue. Nico would return to the track while both Ferrari's remained in their pits. Hamilton continued on the harder tyre while team-mate Kovalainen was out on the softer tyre. Massa was back out while Kovalainen and Hamilton were down in eighth and ninth. Hamilton would finally pit. Nico was back out on the harder tyre for this run while Kazuki had joined in. So with an hour remaining Massa was able to move back to the top of the times with a 1m:12.569. Massa was on the harder tyre. Kazuki was out on the softer tyre and was able to improve to be in fourth, 1m:12.886. Nico would pit while Heidfeld using the soft tyre would move into sixth.

Hamilton was now tenth, 1m:13.049, running on the softer tyre. Massa would pit as spots of rain started to appear.

With forty five minutes remaining the order was Massa from Trulli, Vettel, Nico, Kazuki, Coulthard, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Glock and Hamilton. Hamilton had pitted after having not made any real improvement. With the rain the times started to fall away but Nico and Kazuki continued to circulate around the track. Bourdais would again run wide at the Senna S but was able to turn his car around and continue. Nico would pit while Vettel came back out. Kazuki would follow Nico back into his pit shortly after. There was little change in the order was Massa returned to the track. Kovalainen was back out on the softer tyre. After a short stop Nico was also back out. Hamilton would return on the softer tyre. Massa was out on the harder tyre.

Hamilton would improve but only to seventh, 1m:12.941. He was over 0.5 seconds off Massa's pace. Kazuki was back out. Hamilton continued to have problems with locking his right front wheel. Raikkonen was now back out on the track as the rain eased off making conditions better. Trulli would spin at Turn twelve while Raikkonen improved to be in fifth, 1m:12.838, splitting the two Williams drivers. Nico was still in fourth but Kazuki had dropped to sixth. Both Williams drivers were completing longer runs with twenty three minutes left in the session. Kubica would move into ninth using the softer tyre, 1m:12.971. Nico would again pit followed by Kazuki a few laps later.

Hamilton would return to the track on the softer tyre while Nico would make an adjustment to his front wing and come back out. Kazuki was also back out with fifteen minutes remaining. Hamilton was now fifth, 1m:12.827, dropping Kazuki down to seventh. Both Ferrari's were in their pits. Massa would be the first to return to the track, coming out on the softer tyre. Nico was back in his pit after only a short run. Ten minutes remaining and Massa was still leading from Trulli and Vettel, with Nico still fourth. Kazuki would pit. Trulli was running on the harder tyre. Hamilton had pitted while Raikkonen was back out and would improve with a 1m:12.600 to move into third. Webber would also get some extra pace moving into fourth, 1m:12.650. Both drivers were on the softer tyre.

With the final minutes counting down most of the field was back out. Hamilton was back on the harder tyre. Alonso was able to find a huge piece of time moving to the top of the times with a 1m:12.296. Nico and Kazuki were now eighth and tenth. Piquet would also improve to be in seventh, 1m:12.703. So with the end of the session it was Alonso fastest from Massa, Trulli, Raikkonen, Webber, Vettel, Piquet, Nico, Hamilton, and in tenth Kazuki. An improvement from the Williams drivers but is it enough to enable them to perform well come qualifying and the race.
