Scarlets name side for Borders
By Paul
September 2 2004
Wales internationals Dafydd Jones and Dwayne Peel have been named as replacements in Llanelli Scarlets' opening Celtic League match with Borders at Netherdale.

Peel who started all three games on Wales's Summer tour is to be used as back up for fellow scrum half and tourist Mike Phillips, whilst Jones is named on a bench that includes rookie Llanelli club hooker Craig Hawkins in Aled Gravelle's absence. Subsequently former Warrior Matthew Rees starts.

Despite a relatively poor start to his Scarlet career against Wasps', Tongan winger Aisea Havilli is handed his first Celtic League start for the region, as is Gavin Thomas who completes an impressive back row with Simon Easterby and Scott Quinnell.

Selesi Finau who struggled at centre last week, returns to the wing making way for Matthew Watkins and Tal Selley to re-unite, with Mark Taylor rested. Barry Davies has also been left out at the request of Mike Ruddock

Looking forward to the Scarlets head Coach, Gareth Jenkins said: “We’re comfortable with the Regions at the moment, their Squads and the Personnel they have in place. With a new Coach in place and a number of new players in the squad I must admit that I do feel a little uneasy, we would have liked a little more information to work with.”

On the injury front, the Scarlets are hopeful that full back Lee Byrne is verging on match fitness and long term injury victims Mark Jones and Phil John should be back in contention by October following a successful pre-season.
