Zippy's Player Ratings - Wales vs Fiji
By Zippy
November 11 2005
Player ratings for the undeserved Wales 11-10 win over Fiji who played like Lions for the 80mins and were thoroughly good value for the win, for details read on.

15. Lee Byrne (5) – Missed the tackle for the try, apart from that pretty safe but lacked the confidence to back himself at times.

14. Kevin Morgan (4) – Not looking at home on the wing and got injured

13. Mathew J Watkins (6) – Looked a danger, still a bit of a headless chicken at times and I’m not sure about his hands but looking the best of a bad bunch at 13.

12. Sonny Parker (4) – Just looked average really, the dynamic player with a great handoff we once knew is no more, only just come back from injury so may need time.

11. Shane Williams (3) – 6 Nations, Lions, Injury, he looks low on confidence and ideas, I think he needs a break from international rugby to get his appetite back.

10. Nicky Robinson (3) – The papers will say he won the game tomorrow, but he was lateral, kicked poorly and looked raw, a long way off being an international player.

9. Gareth Cooper (4) – Pacey and a danger from the scrum, his passing is his Achilles heel and I can’t see him playing next week.

8. Michael Owen (5) – Played his captains role in the 2nd half and held things together just about, as for his own game looked weak at carrying and took always trying to offload when on the backfoot is the bad play.

7. Martyn Williams (4) – Supported OK but he won’t be happy with the simple errors he made, Colin Charvis will return to the jersey next week.

6. Alix Popham (4) – Not classy enough to be an international and perhaps Andy Powell at the Blues deserved the chance more.

5. Luke Charteris (4) – Not really used at the line out and if he isn’t going to be used for that then I don’t really see why he is on the field as his general play is far from complete.

4. Brent Cockbain (3) – Out of form, pretty much anonymous and his worst game in the jersey, hope his injury isn’t too bad, it looked nasty.

3. Chris Horsman (7) – Wales MOTM, set piece solid and carried confidently, looked aggressive and the one bright spark.

2. Rhys Thomas (3) – Fiji didn’t compete at the line out and it still looked a struggle and several of the throws might have been called not straight, his open play is sketchy.

1. John Yapp (3) – His basic skill levels looked primary school, has done the work in the gym seemingly at the expense of basic handling.

Subs Of Note:

Adam Jones – Solid but slow

Michael Phillips – Direct

Overall Comments:

Wales looked a side out of confidence, the tactics were completely wrong and going wide against a side like Fiji without hitting them up the middle first is just baffling.

The number of handling errors had me pulling my hair out and I have to apologise for some of my language!!!

As for Fiji they deserved to win and played and showed why rugby would be the loser without them. Given money and resources they could really be a force, great performance and they were good value for the win.

Wales on this form do not stand a chance against South Africa next week and we could be in for another record defeat at home, hope someone proves me wrong.

Oh and one final comment, the apply named Rob Dick-inson, played his usual part.

Fiji Stars:

Rawaqa – 2nd Row/100m Runner!

Bai – Not the most skilled fly half but made the most of what he has

Ligari – Great last line of defence
