Barclays Churchill Cup Venues 2007

The Barclays Churchill Cup, the alliance tournament played between the RFU, USA Rugby and Rugby Canada, will be staged at five different venues across England this summer, meaning more people than ever can enjoy the international tournament.  Pool matches will be hosted from Sale to Exeter and with Finals Day being staged at Twickenham, the three week tournament promises to be a festival of international rugby for fans across the nation.

The tournament, being staged in England for the first time, will kick off on Friday 18th May at Sale Sharks' home ground, Edgeley Park,  in Stockport.  The club will host a preview of the Rugby World Cup match later in the year as the England Saxons take on the US Eagles  who England face in France on 8th September.

Nathan Bombrys, Commercial Manager, of Sale Sharks said,  "We are very excited to be hosting the opening match of the 2007 Barclay’s Churchill Cup.  The presence of England, featuring so many world class players, provides both England and Sale Sharks with an excellent opportunity to reach a new audience of sports fans across the north west.

“The fact that the match will be played against the US Eagles, England’s first opposition, will also add weight to the fixture as we expect that rugby supporters across the Northwest will be keen to get a sneak preview of the World Champions' first opponents.”

Exeter Chiefs will host both of Ireland A's pool stage matches - against Canada on Saturday 19th May and the New Zealand Maori  on Tuesday 29th May.

Tony Rowe, Chief Executive of Exeter Chiefs said: “We were delighted when we were awarded the England Saxons match against Italy A earlier this month and we were very pleased with the organization and smooth running of Sandy Park stadium on the night, which clearly demonstrated we have the ability to accommodate big matches and big crowds.

“We are equally delighted with the news that we are to host two further international matches during the Barclays Churchill Cup which is a testimony of what we have achieved at Sandy Park.  The news gives a huge boost to Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club and to rugby throughout the south west."   The Maori match  at Exeter also bears historical interest as Exeter hosted the All Blacks' very first match in the northern hemisphere back in 1905."

Wednesday 23rd May will see the tournament travel east from Exeter to Henley RFC which will host Scotland A against the USA.

Andy Jones, Operations Manager of Henley said,  "We are delighted with the announcement that Henley will be hosting one of the Barclays Churchill Cup fixtures.  We look forward to welcoming our visitors from both the USA and Scotland to enjoy our warm hospitality."

The reigning Barclays Churchill Cup champions, the New Zealand Maori, will play their first pool game match against Canada on Friday 25th May at Franklin's  Gardens.

Allan Robson, Chief Executive of Northampton Saints said,  "Franklin's Gardens has hosted a variety of representative England matches but never have we staged a Barclays Churchill Cup game which we are looking forward to very much. This region is a hotbed of rugby and I know that the supporters will come from miles around to see the exciting New Zealand Maori, last year's Barclays Churchill Cup winners,  take on the fast improving Canada side as they prepare for the World Cup. And, of course, it is quite likely that some of Saints' own kiwi players will be taking part in this match too."

Bank Holiday Monday (28th May) will host England's final pool game against Scotland A at Twickenham, and all six teams play on Finals Day at Twickenham on Saturday 2nd June.

Terry Burwell, Tournament Director of the Barclays Churchill Cup, said, "We are delighted to be able to offer so many rugby fans the chance to see top international teams in action in their region.  Rugby fever will hopefully be building as we head towards the Rugby World Cup 2007 this September and the Barclays Churchill Cup offers sports fans a taster of some of the young hopefuls in contention for the World Cup itself.  The pool stages are being hosted by some fantastic rugby grounds across the country and the schedule fits in with the ethos of the alliance to deliver rugby to new audiences and encourage participation."

Matt Appleby, Barclays Sponsorship Director, added, "The Barclays Churchill Cup coming to the UK is good news for rugby fans.  It will give fans the chance to see some of the stars of the future and to watch teams they don't normally get the chance to see live in this country.  The tournament is vital for the development of the sport across the world and the standard of rugby seems to get better every year."

Paul Vaughan, Business Operations Director of the RFU said, "It is great news that Twickenham is able to host both the England Saxons / Scotland A match, as well as Finals Day.  I am sure Scotland will be looking to repeat their win over the Saxons this summer but with a range of world class players to call on (Mark Cueto, Mike Catt and Peter Richards recently played for the Saxons) it should be a fantastic match.  Finals Day offers fans the unique chance to see six international teams in action in one place on the same day."
