A NEW Sevens "Ruggerfest" in 2008 - AMHERSTBURG Onatrio Canada

The town of Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, will be the host of a new Sevens, International Rugby Tournament, commencing August 1st 2008, and running until the 4th of August, 2008 at H. Murray Smith Centennial Park.

AMHERSTBURG Onatrio Canada

H. Murray Smith Centennial Park - Victoria St. and Fryer St. Simcoe to Richmond St. The largest of all Amherstburg Park. Park area is 27 acres.

This festival will be a first for the County of Essex, home to a growing number of rugby players and enthusiasts. The festival will be called "Ruggerfest.” The centrepiece of the festival will be an international rugby tournament.

In its inaugural year, the tournament will match amateur teams of men and women from the United States and Canada, with the hope of someday attracting teams from other countries around the world. They'll compete for the title of Champions of the Amherstburg Ruggerfest.

This new festival will be a celebration of the venerable sport of rugby and the traditions of spectatorship attendant upon it. Events such as rugby workshops for beginners, and children's flag rugby are intended to encourage visitors of all ages and skill levels to have active fun while learning about rugby play. International food and beer tasting tents will be open to the public for a fee, with accredited beer experts conducting free beer literacy seminars throughout the length of the festival.

The objectives of the tournament and festival are to build excitement for the game of rugby, while simultaneously inviting a wide and diverse number of visitors to  discover the charming, historically rich town of Amherstburg, Ontario. The international attention and economic boon to hospitality purveyors and local microbrewers in the Windsor-Essex County region are intended to bolster the economy and international profile of Amherstburg as a tourist destination.
