Rugby Legends Pitch In for Children’s Charity. Starting on March the 15th, Wooden Spoon begins two years of celebrations commemorating the birth of rugby’s charity supporting disadvantaged children. Wooden Spoon Rugby was officially launched in September 2007 and there are now six different sides playing under the Wooden Spoon name.

A host of former international rugby players will be showcasing their skills at Richmond Athletic Ground on Saturday when England Legends take on Ireland Legends to commemorate the 25th anniversary of children's charity Wooden Spoon.

 

Kicking off at 10.30am, and just a short distance from Twickenham, the fixture will provide an excellent start to the day for fans attending that afternoon's RBS 6 Nations fixture between England and Ireland. The game promises to be a thrilling encounter, with ex-British and Irish Lions Ben Clarke (England), Mick Galway and Tyrone Howe (both Ireland) among those taking part.  Admission price is £5, with all proceeds going to Wooden Spoon.

 

The charity, which is heavily supported by British rugby, was born as a direct result of England ‘winning' the wooden spoon in 1983, a campaign that culminated in a loss in Dublin.  On their return to London, several disappointed fans were determined to turn that defeat into something more positive and set up Wooden Spoon - deciding that rugby's values of team spirit and camaraderie could be harnessed to support mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people. 

To date, the charity has donated over £13 million to causes throughout the UK and Ireland.

History of the Charity:

Wooden Spoon is rugby's charity supporting mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people. Spoon has committed to over £13 million in spending for projects for children and young people. It has organised over 2,000 events and had over 25,000 ties worn by its loyal members and supporters. Hardworking staff and volunteers have achieved all of this since the birth of the charity.

It all began on a fateful day in Dublin in 1983 when England's Five Nations season ended in disaster with defeat by Ireland leaving them languishing at the bottom of the table.

A group of English supporters were presented with a Wooden Spoon by their Irish opponents to mark this historic occasion. On returning home the proposal to play golf for the spoon attracted the interest of fellow English supporters. Over 100 people attended that golf day at Farnham and by the end of the evening £8450 had been raised. The funds were cashed in for a minibus purchased for the Park Special Needs School in Aylesbury.
