England Under 19s name side to face New Zealand in World semis

As England U19s prepare to take on New Zealand on Easter Monday in the semi finals of the IRB World Championship in Dubai, RFU National Academy and England U19 coaches Nigel Redman and Damian McGrath today named their team, with only one change to the starting line up which beat South Africa. Adam Greendale of Leeds Tykes and Hymers College comes in at fly half for the injured Wasps’ No 10, Daniel Cipriani.

Having won against Africa 45 – 18, against Argentina 28 – 23 and lost against Ireland 16 – 17, England have emerged from a tough group to take on top ranked New Zealand, while France meet Australia in the other the semi final.

Said Redman: “We felt that what we need at this juncture is continuity and although some players will obviously be disappointed not to get a start they will have the chance to make an impact from the bench.

“Whenever you come to these world tournaments, whether it’s at U19 or U21 level, New Zealand set the standard and they have got some terrific players both individually and collectively. They have this desire to play for the All Blacks and to gain contracts with regional sides and Super 14 teams. And it’s the same for our lads - they have everything to play for too. I can see it being a terrific match.

“England and France have emerged from possibly the toughest group and we go into Monday with our eyes wide open and understanding that we are playing against possibly the best U19 side in the world at the moment. One thing about being in a tough group is that it does prepare you and after three challenging games everybody has now played a massive part in where we are at the moment.

“It may be a cliché, but we have really been taking each game at a time and we put an awful lot into the South Africa game and felt a huge amount of relief after beating them convincingly. Now it’s a case of lifting the players again. As far as training is concerned there is not a lot you can do at this stage, but you can rest their limbs and ensure that they are thinking about their performance.

Said McGrath: “While we are disappointed for Daniel Cipriani that he is out of the tournament, we have a ready made replacement in Adam Greendale. The players have played with him at fly half on several occasions and players and management have complete faith that Adam can do the job.”
