There is not a lot you can say about Brian O'Driscoll that has never been said before. Often described as the world's best centre and usually in "Six Nations XV's" or "World XV's", it's hard to believe the man from Dublin is only 24-years-old. He seems to have been around forever, terrifying defences and winning plaudits from both his teammates and opposition. Educated at Blackrock College and University College Dublin, he was called into the Ireland squad for their 1999 summer tour to Australia, where he made his debut for the first team. He is now an established member of the side, earning 38 caps to date and inheriting the captaincy from long-term injury Keith Wood. Up until England in the Six Nations 2003, O'Driscoll's record as captain was played 7, won 7.
Against Italy in the 2003 Six Nations he broke the record previously held by Brendan Mullin for most tries scored by an Irish player, having scored 18 in his 38 tests. O'Driscoll was catapulted to fame after an amazing performance against the French in the 2000 Six Nations, scoring two tries in Paris. He flew out to Australia with the 2001 Lions and was expected to be and rightly chosen as the test 13. In the second half of the first test, he scored a fabulous individual effort that will come back to haunt the Aussies ever and has been described by the likes of Martin Johnson as the best try ever scored.
Off the field, O'Driscoll relaxes by playing golf with father, Frank. Having had the priveledge of meeting him in 2002, I can say he is friendly and charming to fans and willing to give up his time to sign a couple of autographs. Perfect in every way. How very irritating.
