Denis Hickie is almost a complete winger, fast and accurate in attack and strong and resilient in defence. What more could you want? Despite his side enduring a torrid day at Twickenham in 2002, Hickie stood out for his outrageous and brave defensive efforts. Since making his debut in 1997, he has won 37 deserved caps. Having lost his place in 1998 on the tour of South Africa, he did not wear the green of Ireland again until the 2000 Six Nations championship when he was recalled for the game against Scotland.

Since then, Hickie has not been dropped, his absences in games down to either resting or injury. Although on the 60-man squad list for the 1997 Lions tour, injury prevented Hickie's selection (if it would have come at all). He was again injured for the 2001 Lions. With 15 test tries to his name, he is chasing Brian O'Driscoll's record and fast developing into a much needed and crucial part of the Ireland and Leinster backlines.
