One of the two men we can blame for the endless O'Gara/Humphreys debate. For most of his international career, excluding the first couple of years, it seems he has been on a jobshare with Munster's Ronan O'Gara - neither of them really seizing the 10 shirt for themselves for any long periods of time. In Autumn 2002, it seemed O'Gara - who kicked Ireland to victory against Australia - had finally managed to seal himself as Ireland's number 10, but he was injured before the Six Nations the following year. Humphrey's was put into the first team and played so well, that when O'Gara recovered from his injury he was left out of the team in favour of the Ulster man.
Humphrey's has captained the squad on many different occasions, usually as a stand-in for an injured captain. He most recently captained Ireland on their summer tour in 2003. Humphrey's hasn't had a good second half to the year, so it'll be interesting to see who's in first place come the World Cup this year. However, he is still Ireland's most-capped flyhalf and has scored 412 points to date - an Irish record.
