It may not have been pretty, it may not have been convincing but, after the disappointment of defeat at Bristol the previous week, at least Pertemps Bees got back to winning ways in this Powergen Cup third round tie at Castle Park.
They did not expect an easy ride against a side with National One aspirations and with a squad including a number of experienced full-time players.
It took a long time for the Bees to break down Doncaster's stubborn resistance and it was only when skipper Ed Orgee, recovered from a knee operation, was introduced as a replacement for the that victory was secured.
Tim Walsh, who was promoted from the bench to play out of position in the cntre when Simon martin withdrew with a knee injury, ghosted through Doncaster's defence for a superb individual score which settled Bees' nerves and banished the memories of a dithering display from the Australia sevens international at Bristol.
Aaron Takarangi then put the seal on victory with the Bees' third and final try which allowed last season's cup semi-finalists to withstand a late score from Doncaster's replacement lock Ed Norris.
Mark Woodrow, recaled for his first competitive game since the league opener at Henley on September 4, gave the Bees the early initiative with two penalties but Doncaster responded with a penalty from Jon Boden, a former Bees trialist two years ago, and a try from Neil Hennessy that Boden improved.
Boden added another penlaty before Walsh set up former Wales Under-21 international Scott Williams for the Bees' opening try which Woodrow improved. A third penalty from Woodrow allowed the Bees to regain the lead but Boden pulled Doncaster level early in the second half.
Nerves and tempers became frayed with a mass brawl but Walsh's solo score secured a home tie for the Bees against Orrell on November 6.
